I'd just like to give a shout out to the guys who run the Crewe Heritage Centre and the (relocated) Exeter West box. I spent a thoroughly enjoyable day here, and after being asked "would you like to pull a few levers?", proceeded to spend 6 1/2 hours playing trains with the guys there! They were all very helpful and friendly, and certainly made me feel welcome. I just thought I should recommend a day out to anyone interested in mechanical signalling (a fully-simulated 130 lever box, running to real timetables, passage of trains, weighted levers, and annoyed drivers phoning the bobby!) or early power signalling (Crewe North Jn box is also preserved, with the miniature levers) - for only £5 for an adult, it's certainly money well spent. For anyone interested, relevant links are: http://www.studio433.co.uk/exeterwest/ http://www.therailwayage.co.uk/signalboxes.htm Of course, this isn't just one way - I also recommended Simsig to the guys there! So are they open every weekend for people to "play" with?

They're open Easter-September, every weekend, and they all seemed friendly - so I'm sure if you ask nicely you can have a go! I've also heard they're looking for more people to help run the thing as volunteers, and they do training over the winter season.
