Where is the timetable? 14/09/2010 at 20:56 #1764

Recently we changed the location of timetables as Windows Vista and later prevented users from saving into the Program Files directory, where timetables were stored. By default this is now under the Public Documents folder. The installer, however, installs to Program Files -> SimSig.

There is an option to choose where to look for timetables - either in the public documents folder or the folder above. The option to select this is under Options ? Control “Use Public Documents folder”. Uncheck this and it'll find the timetables under Program Files.

Apologies for the confusion; I should have handled the transition a bit better. I'll also try to amend the installer so it puts the timetables in the public folder rather than under Program Files.

Rather than a prescriptive decision about TT location, could there be an option to select whether to install the TTs in a sub-folder where the .exe is installed or in the Public or Shared Documents folder?

I think it would not be right - best practice for Windows has for a long time been not to install user-writable files into the program folder, as this should be read-only to the user. This has only begun to be enforced in the newer versions of Windows, like Vista, but it has been in the guidelines since earlier than WinXP.

So the public documents folder seems like the right place for it, and I personally support the move to change it. Thesenthings are always difficult, but it's the right place for the future.

I have to say that your answer appears prescriptive based on the way that you expect systems to be organised. I do not have my SimSig .exes in the Programs folder and therefore do not fall into your best practice category; I use another location so that I can keep separate track of all of my SimSig dealings. This is possible because the SimSig set-up allows me to choose where to put the .exe files. My preference would be to have the same sort of choice available for the location of the TT files so that I can keep the TTs with the .exes. That way, I can maintain my existing practice of keeping all of my SimSig information in a single place. It also means that I don't have to re-jig my backup arrangements which work quite happily at the moment.

It is going off on a different tangent and is certainly not directed at Geoff or SimSig, but I do get aggravated when software writers decide that they know better than I do what I want on my system. Why do so many programs insist of forcing icons onto my desktop or entries into my QuickStart bar or Start Menu at a place of their choosing. I have my machine set up the way I want it and I would like to have control over what happens to it.

Edited to explain myself a little better.

Like Postal, I too like to make my own arrangements. In my case a separate folder on the desk top, but then
I am mostly dealing with testing so it's more direct.

truckgirl,

Load the sim as normal and when it asks which timetable you want click "(none)", then click "show" and under "options" uncheck "Use Public Documents Folder" and you'll be in business.

Before I did the uncheck as prescribed I had a splash shot of Foxhall Junction appear(!). Strange I thought and have been trying to figure out how that would/could have happened. Did anyone else get the same? No problems with timetable though, thanks Clive et al.

It's a default shot if the developer hasn't loaded any splash shots for the sim.

I'm not entirely sure what the 1,SSG file is for, but it might be the cause of the problem?

Do a search of your pc and see if it ended up somewhere else.

EDIT: thinking about it, I saved a game and called it "1", so that's why you don't have it and is therefore not the problem.

Try uninstalling the sim and trying a fresh install and see if that works.

.ssg files are only save files and therefore not neccessary.

You need to note that the supplied timetable with the simulation has roughly a 5 minute delay until the first train enters - the timetable starts at 04:30 and the first train enters at 04:35. When you've got the simulation up and running and ready to go you could always hit the 'f' key to speed it up a bit until 04:34/5 then return the speed to normal by pressing 'n'.

Foxhall Jn is a default I believe hard coded into the build. It is ignored if you have any splash screens saved to the folder, I presume there are none have not downloaded it yet- I did give some to Clive.

You can create your own simply naming any photo Splashn where n is any number and in jpg format.

If you have splashes then it maybe a bug.

Splashes should be in the same folder as the TT and from the screen shot above it does not seem to be the case there.

I've just checked, and the splash screens are definitely being installed. It looks like there's a bug in the core code (Peter, could you put this in Mantis, please) that means it's looking in the same place as the timetables, rather than in a fixed place. So if you turn off the "use public folder" option in F3 then the splash screens all work.

Given the way that some of us like to arrange our hard disk(s), could we have the option of where to install the splash screens rather than it being hard-coded into the installer, please.
