I suspect the "latest forum topics" area gets loaded first which notices posts unread, and then the forum itself is loaded which marks the post as read. I'm not sure it's a bug but "just the way it works", nor am I sure whether there's a way to fix it. Same happens with the PMs, incidentally. Regarding the index/recent topics 'debate', I seem to have stumbled across something interesting. If you double-click on the 'Forum' link it appears to show the index page, but one click shows the Recent Topics page.
