railway related things to do in the UK? 16/07/2011 at 20:09 #17842

my self and 2 - 4 irish rail personnel are planning a railway related trip to the UK for a weekend. With the National Railway Musem York and Exeter West Signal box at crewe already on our list, does anyone know off some other good railway related places we could visit?? and also I am aware that for some of the meets some SimSig members have got to visit working boxes at the location of the meet, does anyone know how we would go about getting to view a real box in action as i have encountered some difference's in Irish and UK signalling protocal on SimSig so we are all interested in seeing how the operation of a UK box compares to a box in Ireland??

Alan.

Does this trip coincide with the unofficial Exeter West meet?

The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry is well worth a (free B) ) visit too.
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Ill second that. Had a look up there whilst on a Canal Boat trip of the Cheshire ring and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Also, depending on where you are in the country, I would recommend the West Somerset Railway, The North Yorkshire Moors Railway ( A bus ride from York) and the Severn Valley Railway. These are all long lines with nice views.

The London Transport Museum ought to get a mention, though I haven't been there in years. The Welsh Highland Railway with its flat crossing of the ETCS-signalled Cambrian line is a nice, if long, jaunt with a short bit of street running too - and the Ffestiniog joining it is supposed to be good as well.

With signalbox visits I would suggest going via your railway colleagues as "kin" are more likely to be welcomed than a request from the public.

The rail museum has a live feed from York IECC allowing you to see all the signallers screens in real time. You can actually see the cursor moving to set routes (although the majority of routes are set by ARS). Very handy for knowing if theres a train approaching. Last time I was there they had York North and South workstations up. I'm not sure if the Leeds areas have subsequently been added.

I you're going to be near the S Coast or London for that matter, you could visit the Bluebell rly. Apart from the joys of steam traction, at Horsted we have the original 40 lever frame (although much modified) in the original 1882 box. You would be welcome to visit if you can give some notice.

Not sure if you'll be into this but you could always take a short walk away from Liverpool St mainline station to Worship Street to see the bouncy castle?!!

There are many preserved railways around the UK and some of them are very near or even joined onto the national rail network such as the Watercress Line, Poppy Line and the Nene Valley Railway. There are even some Narrow Gauge lines dotted around the UK too as well as model railway exhibitions. Might be worth getting some various railway magazines or even the newspapaers to find out other railway related tourism activities too like specials or excursions. Some of us like to simply go onto a busy station with various traffic going through and do some trainspotting.
