Sims in TXT form using SIMSIG font. 24/07/2011 at 20:18 #18292

Good Evening People of SimSig.

A while back, I discovered the font SIMSIG for word processors that installs itself with the System Files. I noticed that you can write the track plan for any area in "Simsig" form with it and have done this for some areas. I think this is the same sort of code that allows developers to build sims, but am not sure.

Noteably, I have written Basingstoke, Plymouth and Weymouth. Other smaller mock ups include Paignton (with the Dart Valley line added), Buckfastleigh (with Totnes main line station added) and the Island Line.

Currently in construction is the West of England line (Honiton - Wilton Jn/Salisbury) and Slough New IECC (Maidenhead/Airport Jn - London Paddington).

I should also mention that I have written the above sims on my own, however I have worked with Karl Latham (headshot119) to create a South of Cornwall sim (Penzance, St Erth, Roskear Jn) and Croess Newydd (Gobowen - Wrexham General/Central).

If these are of interest to anyone, then drop me a PM or reply to this thread.

Sam

Sam,

Regrettably it's not that simple!
I could have shown you how it goes together on Saturday if you'd mentioned.

Im sure there'll be other times.

I noticed this show up in Paint as a text form to place signals, track etc some years ago but I know it doesn't do anything in regards to making a full sim.

Others have used it to create mock ups just to show what it could look like and I have thought of doing it myself (Victoria, Slough New and even the NWM that is on OpenBVE simulator) but I don't know what interest there is in seeing such but some point I want to give it a go.

Is it a sim, or just a track diagram? Methinks the latter.

Latter yes.

There is a Colchester and Brockenhurst map mock up on here somewhere done by other people.

Sam i can definaetly tell you that its not easy, just watching peter doing his little bits that he was doing and it seemed to be very complicated.

Yup, I realise that now.

Ive just finished writing a track plan in notepad for what would probably be called SimSig Barnham. It incorporates Barnham, Arundel, Bognor Regis, Angmering and Littlehampton Boxes. Fairly large area of control and would probably make a pretty good real sim.

If anyone wants the txt file for Barnham, drop an email or PM.

Ill be writing more txt track plans and will keep updating on here if anyone would like them.

Not sure what you mean by "Victoria" but I'd certainly be interested in seeing NWM and Slough New done! :cheer:

UKTM just what I am using at the moment lol

I have messed up Maybank station sidings I know, I need to use the wider track. I will do that later as I had to keep redrawing the area! Working through the OpenBVE Route Viewer for the signals

But now you are missing the most interesting part: The shapes of the track circuits and overlaps ;).

Ah, but in SimSig you have the option of not showing Track Circuits and so one assumes Underwood prefers to not see the track circuits for SimSig simulations so the same applies to this mock-up!

(OK, OK, I know that Underwood could guess at TCs, but I'm not expecting him to and I'm happy to be left guessing at where and how long, etc, TCs may be)

You may find it easier to start a spreadsheet with a small grid size and use that instead. Much more benign than paint.

I don't actually show TCs when I play any of the sims. I don't know where to add them in, plus it doesn't help that the panel doesn't actually exist anyway, so will have to take a hit to how long track sections would be on the map

Where is the left-pointing signal stem, left-pointing exit arrow and platform? I can't find them on Excel 2003.

Progress on NWM so far:

Once I get to Hammerwich and Wellingham I will go back to Maybank and work through adding the appropriate signals. Most the ones currently in there are wrong I've just used them for markers.

I am wondering what workstations should be for what. Should the Salford Loop be separate or divided like the Hartford Loop on the cross?

Looks excellent work so far, please do keep it up! :cheer:

At the end of the day, I don't care about the workstations, I'd just love to see the 'mock-up' completed.

I've no problems controlling the whole lot from one workstation

Looking at the quail maps it does mention which box controls what but doesn't really show workstations, but then again it does show 'stripes' (a bit like how Clive, the developer of Wembley Suburban, describes the simulation view of that simulation) so you could always make them workstations, or you could always use artistic license and make workstations that you think are appropriate.

Yeah most of it works by itself especially on the main straights.

One thing I haven't notice when driving it until now is the trash NR signalling some of the signals on the Salford loop are miles apart and even signals protecting the platform like at Norton on the up main is miles away from the station (well not quite miles but you know what I mean)!

Yes I have noticed the is lines for the old PSB areas so might use those as boundaries, I shall see.
