The best bet would be to open up a new file in notepad or similar, and write A-Z in capitals across the top of the page. Then, on the second line, write a-z in lowercase. That will give you a good starting point of what symbols are what.

As for turning them into sim files, it doesn't work like that (although sometimes I wish it was that easy!) - this thread is just mock-ups, the sims are written very differently, see here.

There's also the Windows character map.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

As my first Post in this Thread has been a bit confusing, thanks to Aaron (Roadrunner) for sending me a copy of the S-Box Tracks & Signals Editor.
I was indeed looking for the Layout Designer, and here is a "small" mockup I have created.

Cheers

See JamesN's post up the page, in response to 'Dwanedibly' asking exactly the same question...

A sample of Class 86's layout drawn using the Track & Signals Editor (formerly, the Unoffical SimSig Layout Designer). I show it here as an example of what SimSig's users can do! Class 86 added the colour himself using Paint. The next version of the program will be in colour.

The Editor is a work-in-progress which I hope to add to the Downloads section one day, to make it available to those that are interested in drawing their own layouts, that is, once I have the agreement of Geoff, the owner of SimSig.

In the meantime, I will send a copy of the existing program to those that asked for it. Send me a PM with an email address if you would like a copy.

PS. You must have a recent copy of Windows to run the program.

Thanks for asking. No, I don't have a problem with that at all and I'm sure people will enjoy using it.

I would welcome being able to get a picture to insert here but I cannot get the attachment to upload. I have tried selecting the file and pressing "Insert" but it doesn't work.

Any tips?

IIRC the forum is set up to allow only certain types of files to upload. We know from the picture below that .jpg will insert. I think .png will but not sure about others like .gif. If you pic is not a .jpg that may be the problem. If it is a .jpg then I'm stuck for tips.

No it was a BMP I was trying to attach. Have now resaved the file as a PNG.

I didn't realise this thread was here.

I also have the Track & Signals Editor that Roadrunner came up with and I fairly recently decided to have a go at Basingstoke ASC (Poole - Wool) panel. I drew it up on the TSE software and, after finishing it and saving it as a BMP (Bitmap) file, appliued the colour using MS Paint: in order to get the colours right I did a screendump from the Exeter sim and copied parts from it to try and get it as close as possible. Yes, I know there is a "build" option but I have found that things don't come out quite as I would like them if I use that option.

The layout took me about 2 weeks: the sidings at Poole gave me a headache trying to get things as they should be and I also had to redo the layout at Hamworthy a bit but I got there in the end: I hope I haven't gone majorly wrong on anything. Seeing as the panel has Signal Group Replacement buttons I have numbered the signals accordingly by putting the numbers into the same shade of blue as the automatic signal buttons.

Abbreviation:
- AN: Automatic Normalisation

Trains Shown:
The trains whose codes are shown ran during the evening on Wednesday 17th August 2016 when the Weymouth Carnival was held and things are shown the way I would think the panel to have looked at 10:45pm that evening. Trains are:

- 1W83 (2035 WAT-WEY, STA 2323): VAR working as running a bit later than usual. usual arrival at WEY is 2320.
- 2W84 (2010 WEY-ESL, STA 0014): was running to time with no variations. Regular working.
- 2Z86 (2230 WEY-BMH, STA 2333): STP working in connection with Weymouth Carnival.
- 5W80 (2218 WEY-BMH): regular train which Real Time Trains said did not operate on 17/08 but I put it in anyway.
- 5W81 (2131 BMH-WEY): VAR working: normally Bournemouth station to Bournemouth Middle Sidings.

The layout is based on the very good panel photos at http://photos.signalling.org/index?/category/32-poole_panel which means that I have inserted the locations where the train codes would be displayed. I would welcome any feedback.

Dave

800px by 800px is woefully inadequate, for a screenshot of King's Cross you can fit from Copenhagen Tunnels to the end of the station, at the left hand side it's not even wide enough to get to Cambridge Jn!

I'd personally block BMP as JPEG/PNG are far better, And also if you could block JPEG for SimSig screenshots  !

Edit, just done a test with KGX

BMP - 24.3MB
PNG - 264KB

Size is 8680x736.

Remove BMP, enable pictures up to 15000x1500.

You can upload whatever size you like - it just scales them back to those limits as far as I can see. I'll experiment with different sizes late but Geoff might not want files too big filling up the site.

After several hours of testing with various size settings I've concluded that the memory used varies considerably but that's about it. Uploading with 8x8 setting appears to give the same size picture as 800x800 and clicking on the picture opens it up to the same size regardless of the setting. Picture quality also appears consistent.

I think the thing is constrained by the page size as I recall there was at one time an issue with large pictures expanding to larger than the screen width.

No, there are limits. Firstly the web server itself (Apache) sets upload file size limits. Secondly the Joomla software has a limit.

Picture size is misleading because a 10000x10000 solid white PNG is likely to be smaller in file size than a 256x256 Mona Lisa JPG. BMP is usually uncompressed and even if it is compressed it is very simple and thus not very efficient like JPG or PNG.

It's been said before but I'll say it again: if it's a SimSig screenshot with simple graphics then PNG or GIF is best; if it's a photo then JPG (or PNG?) is best. PDF... just don't.
