36 posts 		Just been reading on a local gen site that there's been a derailment in the Princess st area, possibly 3 or all 4 lines blocked, as far as i can tell it was an ecs movement thathas derailed, it made me think how much chaos it would cause on the Edinburgh sim, i suppose the only way in and out would be around the sub and basically miss Haymarket out all together

452 posts 		Involved in this. No trains leaving Edinburgh from about 18.00 - not sure if there are any leaving at the moment. Thought it was probably something to/from Haymarket TMD initially, but this would make more sense as it's pretty much stopped all traffic. Inevitable large crowd of people waiting for information. No road transport at present time (too short notice) - suspect this will go on until close!

Online 		According to the Scotland-Rail group on Yahoo! it is 170 393 working 5P37 and it is derailed over lines X and Y at Princes Street Gardens.

895 posts 		oooo no good. I did see on the National Rail's website that it has affected all 4 lines so nothing running between haymarket and edinburgh

5402 posts 		I believe EC trains are using the "Sub" (Niddrie to Haymarket) this morning, possibly XC and FTrans Pennine going that way too - apparently very few Scotrail drivers are cleared for that route. XC have(used to have) a booked passenger turn, as you will know from the Sim.

Following the derailment of an empty passenger train near Edinburgh on Wednesday, the following alterations to services will apply on Thursday 28 July:

ScotRail


Journeys between Edinburgh and Haymarket may be delayed by up to 30 minutes
A half hourly service will run between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street departing Edinburgh at 15 minutes past each hour and 45 minutes past each hour and Glasgow Queen Street on the hour and 30 minutes past each hour, calling at Haymarket, Edinburgh Park, Linlithgow, Polmont, Falkirk High and Croy, journey times will be extended by up to 15 minutes.

Trains between Edinburgh and Helensburgh Central / Milngavie will not run between Edinburgh and Bathgate

Trains between Edinburgh and Dunblane will not run between Edinburgh and Linlithgow

Trains between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central via Shotts will not run between Edinburgh and Livingston South
An hourly 'Fife Circle' service will run to/from Haymarket via Kirkcaldy
An hourly 'Fife Circle' service will run to/from Haymarket via Dunfermline
Services between Edinburgh and Perth / Dundee (which start from / terminate at Perth or Dundee) will not run. Passengers should use Inverness / Aberdeen services which run via Perth and Dundee.

Services between Edinburgh and Inverness via Perth / Aberdeen will run to their normal route and timetable
A half hourly service will run between Edinburgh and Newcraighall calling at Brunstane departing Edinburgh at 21 and 51 minutes past each hour and Newcraighall at 14 and 47 minutes past each hour
Trains between Edinburgh and North Berwick will run to their normal route and timetable (trains which usually run to/from Haymarket will start from and terminate at Edinburgh).

Trains between Glasgow Central and North Berwick will not run between Carstairs and North Berwick
Trains between Edinburgh and Dunbar will run to their normal route and timetable
Buses are running between:
- Edinburgh and Bathgate
- Edinburgh and Linlithgow
- Edinburgh and Livingston South
- Edinburgh and Inverkeithing (supplementing the train service)



East Coast


Trains will not call at Haymarket. Journey times may be extended by up to 30 minutes.


CrossCountry

Trains which usually start from and terminate at Glasgow Central will start and terminate at Edinburgh. Passengers should use ScotRail services between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Passengers may also use Virgin Trains services between Glasgow Central and Birmingham New Street.


Sounds like there is 1 line that is safe for them to be able to send trains down as edinbrugh-Glasgo trains are stopping at haymarket. Unless as peter has mentioned they are going via the SUB line. Does make you think though as to why they would be stopping at haymarket is that was the case unles they can't get coach services to run in addition to the others they have

Anyone here live in edinbrugh and could give us more details?

There's a lot of discussion on www.scot-rail.co.uk (need to be a member) but since someone mentioned wheel skates it's turned into an exercise in how many fish based puns you can get in a sentence! or should that be fish-paste puns?

Having said that, how did a discussion on skates get into a discussion on a rail derailment?

5402 posts 		I believe the sole reason is that the whale-set is damaged on the turbotstar hence the requirement for the skate to take it back to bass.

452 posts 		y10g9 - looks like lines W and Z are in use only, hence limited ('essential-only'paths going. Unfortunately not been past the affected area so can't say if the train's still there or not. Fife trains terminating at Haymarket (but only Fife circles - as there's not much room else to terminate any more there!) Dunblane trains stopping at Linlithgow and Shotts/GLC at Livingston South with buses running. As Peter said, EC via Niddrie, (what there are of them these days), TPX/XC seem to have paths.

36 posts 		The latest I've seen is the re-railing is meant to be happening around 2300 tonight and closing of all four lines from 2100.

At 17:51 hrs on 27 July the 17:10 hrs train from Cowdenbeath to Edinburgh Waverley, formed of a 3-car class 170 diesel multiple unit, was passing over the junctions in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, at about 19 mph (30.5 km/h), when all wheels of the leading bogie of the last vehicle became derailed to the left at facing points 167B. These points were set for the train to take the right-hand route, from the up north line (line Z) towards platform 15 at Waverley station. The train, which was crewed by a driver and a conductor, ran for about 90 metres before coming to a stop, and the derailed bogie caused damage to the track. There was also some damage to the underside of the train. No-one was hurt.

The RAIB’s preliminary examination has found that the derailment occurred because the flanges of the wheels climbed over the left-hand switch rail of points 167B, which was heavily worn. Network Rail has examined the other switch rails in the Princes Street Gardens area, and has not found any others in a similar condition.

The driving of the train and the operation of the signalling system played no part in the causes of the accident.

The investigation will include an examination of the condition of the train and the track to establish the mechanism of the derailment. It will review the history of the points concerned and work that was carried out on them in the days before the accident, the competence and fitness of the maintenance staff, and the organisation and resourcing of infrastructure maintenance in the Edinburgh area.
