Did the timetable have a stopping time at royston instead of a passing time? And did it also show the next working? If so, then the train will terminate and start back on the same line.

not sure aboutv this but could be a possible tcf entering the area so trains not registered off sim till off it, and having to be talked past?

Right then, I've got a better explaination...

If a train has a stopping time instead of a passing time at Royston, that train will stop at Royston (yes off sim, but still in the data) and not move, blocking other trains from leaving the sim.

If trains have a stopping time at Royston AND a next working, they will stop, become the new train and reverse - "entering" the sim on the wrong line.

Which timetable were you using? Does it show stopping times at Royston instead of passing times?

Which version of the 1985TT?

The reason I ask is that the latest version which I've seen/used a lot is v7.21, however I did notice that 4L65 (the double header from Dalston) had a different divide location viz Harringay not Finsbury K381.

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
