I'm seriously considering taking on one of these perhaps before the end of the month. I don't really fancy the 7/14 day ALR's, believing these to be the domain of the so called 'track bashers'!

I live in an awkward area, (Sleaford) giving poorish access to the main line. (I think I would need to go to Nottingham and start a Ranger/Rover there.

Anybody on here done any of these and which ones are good value. I don't mind staying overnight somewhere to get the most out of them.

Apologies if this post is not SimSig mainstream, but I'd like some opinions if thats possible.

Regards

Fireman Pat

Living in the West Country, The rovers I often use are the Devon Day Ranger and the Freedom of Devon and Cornwall Rangers. These are both good value for anyone who either lives or is on a trip down to Farmerland.

The best rover for around that area is the East Midlands Rover, me and the missus did one last September and enjoyed it, You could get the full 7 day or a 4 in 8 day

The East Midlands Rover is definitely your best bet, available in 7-day and 3 in 7 day (*not* 4 in 8 as birchy74 posted) versions. I did one from Coventry, though I did have a night in Sheffield. If you want some ideas, I blogged about it in quite some detail... The summary post is here, and that has links to details about what I did each day.

Alternatively, you could try an East Midlands Day Ranger, but that doesn't cover nearly as big an area (and doesn't include Sleaford).

Hope that helps!
Dave

The best rover I have done recently is the Freedom of the North East 7 day rover. Based in Newcastle I thought it was fantastic value - up north as far as Berwick and down as far as Retford. Took in places such as Worksop, Sheffield, up to Barnsley and Huddersfield via Penistone. Did all the West Yorkshire electric routes and even a ride to Carlisle via Settle.

From Sleaford however this rover would not be valid so to get to the nearest station (Retford??) might be a bit of a pain..

Well worth it however,

Morning peak restrictions are in place on this rover 0900 (I think!!) Mon - Fri. No time restrictions Sat & Sun.

Thanks for all the responses guys....I'm now more confused than ever!! Seriously, I'll probably take the initial advice and do the 3 in 7 East Midlands Rover.

Thanks again
