Freight trains and TRTS..... 03/08/2011 at 22:24 #19061

Hello....

I was wondering, could a feature be included whereby a freight train does not TRTS when crew changing in a platform?

In normal railway practise a freight train driver would not press the TRTS (ceratinly at a manned station), and niether would platform staff (I have only done it once in 9 years, during the aftermath of an unfortunate incident at the request of the controlling signaller, and that was a light loco).

Could it implemented that if a freight c/c's in a platform that the relief driver phones the panel to confirm he/she is in place and ready to start?

If not fair enough, but after all we are striving for reality....

Paul

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

Interesting, I was thinking the same thing. When I worked at New Street, on the very rare occasion a freight (or any non-passenger train) routed through the station the platform staff left it to the crew to get themselves away, and they usually just rang the PB for the road.

It is an area that could be improved, yes, however there are places where freights do use TRTS! Mostly specific yards or situations.

Indeed Geoff, seen it on TMIS at work, that freight drivers push a TRTS when wishing to leave the reception roads at Acton if heading for the NLL.

There isn't any method of working in respect of freight trains crew changing as it tends to vary from area to area. Take Landor Street Junction, which on the railway network was when Saltley depot was open & probably still is the busiest freight train crew relieving point on the network. The system in place there was the forwarding driver would ring the signaller in Saltley PSB & advise him he was ready to relieve which ever train he was booked to work. The signaller would then allow that train to go forward to Landor Street for relief. If the freight train was coming from Gloucester & running early the train would be held on the Up Goods at SY.23 signal until the forwarding driver made himdelf known to Saltley PSB, If the train was coming from the Leamington Spa direction, again if running early would be recessed in the Down Goods Loop at Small Heath until the forwarding driver made himself known. If the trains were coming from the Nuneaton, Derby or Walsall directions they would be held on the Down Goods at SY.218 signal until forward driver put himself on. By & large the driver relieving freight trains would contact the PSB controlling the area to advise him of being ready to work forward. Especially since the railways were privatised I doubt that station staff would get involved with freight trains as that would be a TOC's train that they wouldn't necessarily know anything about the freight train in repect of destination etc. During my time at Bescot (2001-2005) if there were any issues regarding freight train crew relief we used to receive phone calls from Saltley, Walsall, New Street & Wolverhampton PSBs, we'd eevn get called when the train concerned was a Freightliner service, especially from Walsall PSB as the Freightliner men used to wait in the lobby at Bescot SOP. As all drivers today tend to carry their own 'railway mobile' phones with them they speak direct to the PSB controlling the relieving point. In most cases when a freight is relieved at a station the signal at the end of the platform is usually displaying a proceed aspect as the last thing the PSB wants is a freight train blocking a platform.
