Just came across a topic on guards kit via google and someone (headshot I think!) posted that a guard needs a 221 and possibly a grandmaster key. What would a guard need these for?

A guard would never need a 221 or a Grandmaster. There are very very few people on the mainline that would need a 221 or a GM, and for security reasons I'm not going to go into what they're for.

The only keys (as defined by the RSSB rule book) a guard needs are a BR1 and a Carriage Key.

Both these keys only apply to drivers.... again for security reasons I will not go into the detail in what they are used for but overall they are used by drivers which should give all the details that are needed for people.

I have my own set and when I received them I had to sign a declaration for them.

The context that the original question was asked in was for a heritage railway guard. I am currently training to be one.

My duties in this role require me to have both a grand master and 221 key.

Really........ bloody hell fair point in that case..... strange though for conductors or guards (whichever you wish to call them) are to have a 221 and gm key

I had a 221 key issued when I worked on a heritage line - but that wasn't to work as a guard, and I don't think the guards were issued with one; I certainly can't think of any reason why they should. Of course, god knows if we used 221 locks for the same thing as the Big Railway - they weren't needed by drivers on our line either.

All I know is I need both of them as part of my duties. So I have them.

I don't think that preserved lines use them the same way as the mainline do anyway.

221's and GM's are used for a different purpose on the mainline, if heritage drivers have to have one, but on the mainline they are very strictly controlled.

Why would a driver have one? I have both keys which get used daily in my job on the railway and shudder to think what a driver would need them for?

I could perhaps envisage a driver with a 222 for hand operating points in an emergency but a grandmaster has no purpose in the hands of ops staff...
