If the mods think this is in the wrong place - then feel free to move it - I've put it in the hosting section as I think it's relevant to hosting. Through discussions with people since becoming more involved with Simsig over the past few months, people keep saying I need to get Skype/access to Teamspeak - and so I am seriously exploring options. The biggest issue is I don't have a webcam/microphone etc at the moment, and have just spent an hour looking to see what's out there, and there seems to be a wide spectrum of products, some of which seem useless, and others which seem good. I don't want to (can't) spend a fortune, but does anyone have any serious suggestions on what I should be looking at/where to buy from etc? Are the webcams with built in mics any good, or do I really want one buit into a headset? Many thanks to anyone who can help me out. I'm aware that Skype and Teamspeak are separate, but want to make sure I have something that will work OK with both.

I chat on Skype and/or TeamSpeak most nights and amongst the people I'm chatting to there's some with headsets, some with webcam microphones and some with laptop inbuilt microphones, the only thing I would recommend is having headphones to avoid feedback via speakers, you can pick up a cheap headset from your local supermarket, or search online if you want something with better audio quality.

All I use is a £7.99 headset of ebay works fine for me and certainly makes my voice loud enough.

my webcams built into the laptop but i dont obviously use it for teamspeak. as for a mic, i decided to break the bank and get a mic/earphone set from poundland. it cos a quid (obviously) and i havent had any problems with it at all "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply The following user said thank you: onlydjw |

Thanks for the advice - I'm now sat here with a £25 HD webcam and a £1 mic/headphone set. Hopefully it will all work!

I'm trying to, but I can't connect. I've downloaded and installed the software, think I've set mic volumes etc, and then it says enter the address and port, but there's no box for the port. It keeps asking me for a password, and doesn't like me leaving it blank. Any ideas? God bless, Daniel Wilson Log in to reply |

go on the connections tab, then select server list. search for "SimSig" and the server should appear in the list. double click to connect, no password needed, although one of the admins will need to confirm you as a registered user so you have access to all facilities

When I entered the actual IP address and port (as 31.132.0.60:10028) - it works, and I am (I think) now connected.

I used to use this headset from eBuyer for Skype / TeamSpeak but it only lasted about 4 months before it started to deteriorate (center stereo failed - thankfully worked around by changing the balance settings under Volume Control (Windows XP). which strangely enough didn't mean audio was limited to one ear piece) then 2 months later it got worse (wire issues) so I took the plunge and got this headset from Overclockers and haven't looked back since. Recently fell asleep with it on :blush: and when I woke up and took it off (the headset...) there was no pain or discomfort whatsoever, which is more than I can say after only a couple of hours of using the other headset (first link). Can thoroughly recommend the second headset, and there is at least one other person on this forum who ought to be able to do the same, if they wouldn't mind...
