Hi all Just a quick odd one. I was at the NRM at York yesterday, where the excellent display showing the live feed from York IECC was in operation. One odd thing that i noticed was just south of Northalleron , is level crossing No. 89 which, on the Up Slow and Up Fast , shows two successive signals displaying single yellow. I have uploaded a screen shot of the screen ( I've highlighted the area). It was like this the whole time i was there. Any body know why that is ? Log in to reply |

This was a major source of consternation for me a couple of years back as i thought one of our simulators had developed a fault with aspect sequencing! The signallers at York explained this to me, going from memory is that at some point between now and 1990 when York North workstation was commissioned no.89 crossing had it's type changed and there was thus only a requirement to show that the signal was 'off' and as far as the IECC screens where concerned this just meant displaying a yellow on screen. I think it did used to display a green. I can assure you that as far as the signal aspect memory is concerned it is a green, and it's a green out on the trackside as well. The screens are direct feed from the IECC so the signaller will see the yellow too. As you can probably see the signaller can't see what the aspects of the auto signals beyond them on the up fast are showing, only that they're lamp proved. I can't remember the exact signalling principle that allows this to happen but I can find out and explain in greater detail if someone doesn't beat me to it first. There is another signal on York South workstation that does this also. Log in to reply |

Thanks for the informative reply ! I had noted that the train progression seemed to be constant so therefore the drivers must be seeing green, but it was just odd to see the screen displaying those aspects. Having looked again at the pictures I took I think I can see the "other" one you mentioned. Many thanks again for explaining this oddity.

This particular area is a relay signalled area and aspect information is not available from the interlocking (unlike SSI). The relay interface to the IECC could calculate the aspect displayed but for some reason this was not used - possibly not available when the workstations were commissioned. Why they show yellow and not green I do not know - possibly because theu are controlled signals rather than automatic. Note that only a white block is shown when a route is set, not a full white strip. SimSig Boss Log in to reply |
