Pausing. A farewell... 26/09/2011 at 11:26 #21308

So I've come back after a year away, grabbed shiny new Brighton and Oxted (both old stomping grounds so really looking forward to them) and I am very very sad. They're unplayable. The pause function blocks doing, well, anything. As a single player only (sorry, I play 10 minutes at a time when I have little bits of downtime so network play is never going to work for me) I used the pause function to learn the sim. It was always a personal challenge to get to the point where I could play through without using pause (hello Kings Cross ). However, pause is now useless. I can play at very slow speeds but that is very quickly very very very boring, because I want to do a few activities then speed it up, then slow it down, then speed it up etc etc. Sadly, there was a great built in function for that, it was called "pausing", and it even had it's own keybind!

So, with much regret, I think I am leaving SimSig. I can't play any of the new sims. I'm not going to bother wiping my old beta scrolly version of westbury just to find out it too has now been crippled

i think this is a slightly extreme view towards the pause changes, granted they can be awkward for larger sims, but brighton is a very simple sim after a few pilot sessions, equally westbury isnt that difficult after a while. i think u should persevere and try again

I agree that perseverance is a necessity to now cope with both Westbury and Exeter where not only the 'pause' button stops you doing anything, but you now have to raise quite a few of the LC's manually, Exeter in particular.

When I first played the revised Sims, I was gobsmacked and really didn't get on with them at all. I persevered however and recently completed Westbury with a score of 79% (Practise doesn't quite make perfect)!.

I'm now busy with the Exeter Sim, never having completed the old or the new. Again, at around 8.30am my score is 97%.

Hang in there and don't let it beat you. As has been said, you cannot pause real life!

I understand where cpw is coming from as I too have found some of the sims overly complex for one person to operate with the new pausing system. I also understand the argument for realism. Would it be possible in future releases or refreshes to add an option to allow route setting/cancelling etc (an easy/beginner mode) when paused? Then, those who would like it as realistic as possible may have it so, and those who want the old style of pausing may have it.

Swindon A and B is playable without pausing because of the ARS - it usefully means I can leave the computer to (generally) handle three workstations, allowing me to focus on one. Unfortunately, this 'helping hand' is only available on a few sims, so where pausing means absolutely no input and there's no ARS available, a sim can be too much for an individual to cope with. Presumably this is why multiple signalmen often work on a single SimSig box?

It's on the to-do list. Life hasn't slowed down enough for me to implement it, that's all.

On a similar point, I also find the roll-down menu so annoying and fiddly on the newer sims when you want to alter the header number of a particular train. On older sims, you could find the old header code as default very quickly and in most situations this is what you would want. For example you may need to remove a train's timetable temporarily to move it easily to a new location then soon after restore its timetable - this is not very easily done in the new sims.

In my humble opinion it was a backward step to remove the Pause function.Realism maybe required but developers are getting carried away with it.At the end of the day it is a game.
It would have been courteous if some sort of opinion poll of making that change had been done.
Geoff's remarks about it being on the to do list are welcome but this could mean that years could
elapse before we actually see the change in operation

If we did that for every feature change then nothing would get done.

Somewhat harsh.

i must have missed the part where SimSig was expensive payware which would warrant plenty of its owners and developers personal time.

SimSig is freeware and im happy to get whatever i get.

I hope Didcot meant to word it in a way that it will be sometime before we see a modification as we don't expect to see upgrades in a flash? That is of course understandable, if you have been here you know the staff are volunteers.

I don't mind the pause lock out as people say, it is realistic but as for all simulations you can't meet everyone's specifications. It's like on driving simulators, people want more realism then complain it's now too realistic, where do you draw a line??

At first, I got annoyed with the pause lock out feature, but now I look back and it is actually really good and realistic. I enjoy playing my Brighton timetable when in the rush hour and the phone is going mad. Makes it seem far more fun

For what my two pennorth's worth, I never use the 'pause' on any sims, you can't walk away from a problem in the real job, and I enjoy getting caught up in a problem and feeling good when I've untangled the knitting.

Can I assume those saying you can't pause in real life play the sim for a full 8 hour shift? There are a number of things you can do in SimSig that you can't do in real life just as there are a large number of things you do in real life you can't do in SimSig. It doesn't make it anyless enjoyable for the player.

Well you can certainly pause it at any time- it's just that you can't "play" while paused- that's a slightly different thing.

Its swings and roundabouts really. You can't choose your start time or difficulty level in real life either yet you can in the sim, nor is it likely that one person would be doing the job of four.

You can still jump quickly to the headcode in the roll-down by typing it on the keyboard (although the time between keypresses needs to be quite short)
