Hi, I know that the box at Abercwmboi, on the Aberdare line, closed 09-Oct-1989. Does anyone know if it was demolished though? There are pictures on Flickr of the box and it would seem, looking on Google Earth, as if something resembling a box is still there, at the southern end of the site of the old Furnacitte works on the single-track section at Abercwmboi. I can't see from StreetView though and the view from the air, dated 01-Jan-2001, isn't clear. An interesting picture is this one which shows Abercwmboi box from a train. If the structure ini the image above is the old box then it could be that the box survives minus its porch and steps: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bogbrush6666/4341311846/ It is possible the box was demolished but Abercynon (old) closed 30-May-2008 and that was still in situ last time I passed it. Any info welcome. Thanks. Dave Log in to reply |

That aerial shot seems to show the gabled roof of the box, at least, there's a definite centreline to the top. I've had a look on Bing Maps for a second opinion. Their nice clear aerial view shows a much lower structure without a centreline, also the uplifted track closest to the box can be made out, with the now single line and loop still in existence. The badly blurred birds-eye view was taken at a different time and the shadow seems to indicate something was still there but I get the impression not much above 2 metres tall. Possibly the lower part of the box is being used for storage and had a flat roof added? It's amazing just how quickly the undergrowth is taking over the site. I can't work out where the shed in the photo of the box is on the aerial view. Log in to reply |
