And that explains the mass hiring for numerous vacancies along this line a month or 2 ago. It seems that a collection of the existing staff have escaped before the closures, but putting said closures back needs people to man these boxes!

Sorry to bump this topic but a small update for anyone interested.

Yesterday, on another forum, I had a Private Message from a duty signalman at Brandon who had his last turn on Tuesday. He informed me in his message that, due to problems with and delays in supply of the new equipment, the boxes at Shippea Hill, Brandon, Lakenheath and Thetford are now safe until August / September at the earliest. That gives time to anyone like me who intends to get photos.

All I need to do now is wait for a decent weekend weatherwise.

HTIOI,
Dave

The whole lot is being put under the control of Cambridge and the signals will be coded EN.

Phil Deaves' website says that they are all going to Cambridge. The others are also going that way in October I understand.

Signals in resignalling schemes these days are plated by line of route, not by which box controls them. Just my guess, but for EN read Ely - Norwich.

Sorry to bump this thread. I got back late on Sunday night from a weekend that was, albeit only in the photographic sense, great. The weather remained superb with plenty of sunshine allowing for some great shots.

I decided to do the Ely - Norwich boxes and managed all of them plus two others so:

Friday: Foxton LC (10 photos).
Saturday: Shippea Hill (20 photos + 1 video), Littleport (14 photos), Lakenheath (21 photos), Brandon (11 photos), Attleborough (27 photos + 1 video).
Sunday: Wymondham (30 photos), Spooner Row (18 photos), Eccles Road (22 photos), Harling Road (12 photos), Thetford (14 photos)

So a total of 199 photos: not a bad selection.

The visit to Attleborough was for some photos with a slightly different flavour: I already had 33 photos + 1 video from a visit there in July 2011 so I went back to Attleborough in the dark and used my camera to obtain a selection of late evening photos as it got dark along with some photos when it was dark. The photos were taken in a combination of monochrome (black & white) and colour and came out very well despite the fact that I didn't use the flash. I qwas there around 9 / 10pm before heading up to Norwich for the night.

As for the new signals and crossing equipment I noted the following:

Shippea Hill: OD equipment, barriers and road & rail signals all in place. Road closure scheduled 2300hrs Thursday 16th August through to 0700hrs Monday 20th August. Video clip also includes audio of one of the bells in the box.

Lakenheath and Brandon: OD equipment rail signals and barriers all in place. Road closure scheduled at Lakenheath over the same weekend, but for less time, than that for Shippea Hill. No road closure notice seen at Brandon IIRC.

Attleborough: Surprisingly the barriers, OD equipment and traffic lights have not been installed here and neither, from what I could see, have the new rail signals. No notice seen for any road closure either for the work to take place so could easily not be ready for the scheduled closure date (18th / 19th August) unless NR get their skates on.

Wymondham SJ: Some new signals in place along with some of the cabling.

Harling Road: No OD equipment in place but work appeared to have been taking place to prepare for the installation of the replacement signalling. Still time for the work to be finished here though as the transfer to Cambridge PSB is not scheduled until later this year.

Eccles Road: New crossing & OD equipment all in place. Had a chat with the duty signalman, a member of this forum, who has been giving the box a coat of paint: it looks splendid. The signalman I spoke to thinks that the date for commissioning of the new signalling may slip again: with the work still to be done at Attleborough this is quite possible.

Spooner Row: Supporting posts for OD equipment have been installed but without the OD equipment itself. It was suggested that one of NR's managers was interested in acquiring Spooner Row SB for his garden once it was decommissioned but the signalman at Eccles Road told me that it is now likely to be moved elsewhere for further use as a gate box. I can't remember which crossing though.

OK that's all for the essay.

HTIOI,
Dave

I very much doubt it, most of the contents of that box are set up in a garden somewhere in Hertfordshire

Incidentally, NR/Signalling Solutions are still telling TOCs management that the remaining section will come into operation on 3rd Dec as planned. Most of us Traincrew are more sceptical as there seems to be a huge amount to still do in the short time left.

Just to clarify a few points. At one stage it liked like the signalboxes between Thetford and Norwich would close next March but the latest information I have is that they will close in two weeks. As far as I,m aware control will pass to Cambridge. The new Signalling centre at Romford? which is planned to control the whole of East Anglia/East London has been delayed as the Ground is contaminated.Whether the signalboxes will close this year remains to be seen!

Latest Info. Two signalboxes are being retained as "supervising" Boxes for the time being.
