Spring 2012 meet 29/11/2011 at 16:16 #24024

Thought I'd get this topic under way now. As far as I'm aware, the location for the meet is yet to be decided, and that also means the venue itself is also yet to be decided.

As suggested in this post, Edinburgh might be a good place to go.

Have already made a start on the meet page on the Wiki - where it says TODO but not in Italics then text is waiting to be added, where it says TODO in Italics then something (usually an image) is waiting to be added.

I don't think I'm 'jumping the gun' here, I believe this one and probably all meets for 2012 need to be arranged as soon as possible what with a certain sporting event occurring. It is surely not long until advance tickets can be booked - having just checked now and I could book tickets up to February 29th and that's a Wednesday, so the weekend immediately after it is in March (3rd & 4th).

Discuss, discuss, discuss!

Cardiff isnt a bad bet. Accessable from London (and the the South East) from Paddington but also easy to get to from Birmingham and Cambridge (XC 170). Also Bristol is a good choice as well

So why exactly start a new post, just to have all the same stuff brought up again?????

How about Chester only 20 minutes away from Crewe and direct trains from London and back also trains from Manchester, Liverpool, Shewsbury/south Wales and north Wales.

Regarding starting this thread, the thread linked to was about 2012 meets, this thread is about the Spring 2012 meet in particular. As meet threads tend to end up spanning multiple pages, perhaps it is wise to keep the two separate before that thread ends up being 20 pages long, which I don't think anyone really wants to be trawling through to find some specific information about the upcoming meet.

Regardless, should the meet day be on March 3rd (always a possibility) then advance tickets for that will be available very soon.

The devs had a meeting about the meet immediately after the Derby meet (Life of Brian springs to mind with that sentence). We will very shortly reach a decision, though of course not everybody will be happy.

Suggesting cities or towns to host the meet is one thing but completely misses the rest of the story. Does that city have a suitable venue (name it, don't just say "I think there must be one somewhere")? Is that venue accessible from a major railway station or public transport, without a load of changing buses? Are there restaurants nearby? Are there hotels/B&Bs nearby?

For example, believe it or not, central London does not have many suitable venues. From an ideas list of dozens of pubs, we narrowed it down to less than a dozen, which we visited. Of those dozen, only two were actually suitable. That's how tricky it can be to find somewhere good.

Look at the Wiki on meets to see a more detailed description of what is required. Until then, firing darts at an AA map is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Well rather than throw darts at a road map.

Hops Belgian Style
Or
The Brunswick Hotel

Both are in Crewe and not far from Crewe railway station.

So comments suggestions?

Heres a suggestion. Oxford. Accessable from London and South East from Paddington, also direct from Manchester and Newcastle.

http://www.thedukescut.com/private_hire.php

This is a nice little pub that ive visited a couple of times with my Dad. Whilst I havent seen the hire room itself, It says that it is a free hire on the website illustrated above. £6 is the quoted price on the website for the buffet.

Thoughts and comments?

There's not really much point posting random pubs unless someone is prepared to visit them to research it, in accordance with the wiki page. If you're not prepared to do that, then there's not much point suggesting pubs you've been to and quite liked.

I know that this post is trying to help, but please read Geoff's comments at #12. There is a whole lot more required than a general note that such-and-such a town might be a good venue.

Have we thought about simply having the London meet in March? Same venue as the one we used this year?
