Can't set route into Bristol East Depot 30/11/2011 at 13:12 #24121

Playing Bristol v2.202 1980s 5:30 TT.

9B042 terminates at Bristol East Depot via North Somerset Junction, "RVL" line. I haven't a clue what RVL stands for, but from the map it appears that I need to set a route from 575 to the depot (arrowed). The sim won't let me do this. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

One other small quibble. Other timetables talk of using the line "ST PM CENTRE". There's no such line anywhere near St Philip marked "CENTRE". Does CENTRE mean the main GOODS line, or does it mean the centre of the five main lines coming east out of Bristol Meads, i.e., the line on which signal 59 is, ending up as Filton Main?

While I'm on the subject of missing info, there's no "Cam & Dursley" (displayed on the Train List as a Curr/Prev location) marked on the panel, but I eventually deduced it must refer to signal 130.

Thanks.

Can't see any reason why you shouldn't. What does the message box say when you try setting the route?

My best guess is that there is a train waiting to exit the depot on that line in which case you should get one of the following messages:-
Subroute Locked in Opposite Direction
Not Available

You're absolutely right - "subroute locked in opposite direction". Didn't think of checking Messages. Didn't even occur to me that another train could have been lurking in the throat of the yard. When I begin a new sim the Train List starts to read like the Magna Carta and one tends to miss little nuances like this. Not even a whiff of a headcode on the yard exit to warn you.

To confuse matters further, the first 4 characters of the headcodes are identical.

Does any error message appear in the message box? If it says 'Subroute locked in opposite direction', it means that there is a train waiting to exit Bristol East Depot.
As for the RVL, it stands for Reversible, so if I'm not mistaken, you should have routed the train via the right-hand line and signal 165 from Dr. Days Junction. However routing it the way you did is possible, too.
Signal 130 is located at Charfield, the location name is in fact written between the two running lines.
Cam & Dursley is a bit further up the line towards Gloucester, beyond Berkeley Road Junction, but it's only visible in modern mode, as the station reopened in 1994.

EDIT: I guess that both 9B04s represent in fact the same train, but for some reason the rule, which should have prevented the second part of the timetable running before the first one had finished, has failed.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Thanks Jan for the added info. Shouldn't have to get into a time machine to see how this anachronism got into the act, but will file your idea away for next time. So I guess C&D was the train's previous reported location before it ended up at 130. Wow. Wouldn't mind being trackside to see people's startled expressions as a train from a place ten years into the future suddenly appears on the tracks...

I didn't consider the blindingly obvious possibility that RV in RVL might have stood for Reversal as I'm so used to seeing "REVERSE" or "REV" appear after the name of the waypoint in the timetable. This must be another convention used by SimSig.

Oh well, live and learn. Thanks again all.

The villages of Cam and Dursley had 'always' [at least since before the railway was built] been there, and I think it was the site of a previously closed station before it reopened, so as a description of a location on the line "Cam & Dursley" is relevant for either era whether or not there was actually an open station there. It has to be included as a possible timing point in the simulation because without it trains could not stop there in modern era timetables. Whether it is a compulsory or optional timing point I can't recall.

The original station, though, had an entirely different name - Coaley Junction.

Not "reversal", but "reversible". That is, the line is used in both directions.

Thanks for explaining that, Clive. (makes note to add it to Wiki)

It's easy enough to omit a location found in one TT from a map used by another TT, so I'd like to suggest that Cam & Dursley be added to the 1980's signal map, as played on the sim and on the corresponding signal map. Not as a platform if it didn't exist then, just as a location name.

As a beginner to Bristol, I looked at the manual and decided that as the modern version has lots more track and stations, I'd be better off starting with the 1980s version, so didn't consider looking for Cam & Dursley on the modern map although it seems obvious now. Would be surprised if other newcomers to Bristol didn't react the same way.

This might be a good opportunity for he-who-creates-signal-maps to refresh the Bristol 1980s signal map. I don't know how others find reading this map, but whereas the PDF signal map of the modern TT is sharp and clear, the one from the 1980s era is blurred (as are some others in early sims). Maybe this is just me using Foxit Reader, which in some maps needs to over-magnify a PDF image to make it legible, otherwise it appears as a tiny image. Anyone experience this with Adobe Reader (which I gave away years ago)?

I put most of the plans together some years ago (as you can probably judge from the number of more recent sims that do not have plans on display). All of the plans are put together from screen grabs of the sim so if it wasn't on the screen when I put the plan together, then it is not on the plan.

I've got too much else to do now to have time for refreshing old plans, but if anyone else can find the time to spare, then please update or over-write what is currently in the Wiki.

Thanks JG for letting us know the situation. I don't have that much spare time either (she who must be obeyed sees to that) but maybe early next year.

I've been doing quite a few- the only ones currently unavailable are the three recently released and Edinburgh, and I'll upload Oxted tonight.

My fault- I can't work out how to print PDFs of scrollys without that happening- Postal, if you could tell me, I'd be gratefull. If it proves to difficult, I'll re-upload them as an image. I don't really want to spend time changing plans for those sims which have become scrolly, since paged plans are easier to print.
