Hello everybody,

A big thanks to everybody who has had various work and input into these signalling simulations they are very useful even for people like myself who work in the rail industry.

One a very poor note is the fact I have been kicked off a group network play tonight - I didn't have a clue what KevM was trying to say to me about taking control of my panel? I am very disappointed that a new member who has just joined today may not be aware of the correct procedure or terminology of playing a network game. After all I was only controlling VW6 on the Sheffield simulation which isn't the most difficult.

It would have been nicer to be helped on the 1st simulation game I have played in a number of years before 'taking control of a panel' I could work TRENT fine but I was very unsure how to work Sheffield control panels.

Regards,

Paul

Hello Paul!

If I understand you correctly, you may have been having difficulty in formally assuming control of your panel.

In a single-player game, of course, you control everything and all 'phone calls' are directed to you. It's a little bit different in a multiplayer.

The game needs to be told where to route 'phone calls', so that the right people are annoyed by the right flock of geese, or train waiting at red for more than 0.2 milliseconds.

Additionally, the other players will need a permanent and visible reminder of who controls what; for the purposes of requesting permission to send early freight trains, asking to hold back incoming traffic, or sending death threats, for instance.

This is achieved through an option in the Multiplayer menu, called "Workstation control". Clicking on this should bring up a list of all the sections/panels in the sim, as well as giving you two buttons, which either Take/Assume or Cease/Relinquish control of the currently highlighted section/panel. Note that it is possible to control more than one panel at once, if appropriate; and that (unless you are the host) you cannot take control of a panel someone else is already using.

Once you have taken control, the four-digit code you have used to join the game should now be displayed next to the name of that panel. You'll receive the phone calls associated with that areas crossings, signals, and trains. Neighbouring signallers will hassle negotiate handovers of trains with you. All will be sweetness and light, and the TCF fairy will stay far from your door*.

(* Sentence may not be true)

Be advised that all simulations are slightly different, but the overall principle remains the same. If this doesn't answer your questions, please let me know and I'll try again; and I hope to see you around in multiplayer!

Hi Paul.
Firstly welcome to our happy band. I am sorry that your first multiplay did not go to plan but don't let this put you off as 99.9% of multiplay games have no problems. One thing i will mention about the sheffield sim. When taking control of the panel and you click on workstation control on the version i have you have to then press CTRL/ESC and then you will see the box and so then you take control as stated before after this just go back into the game and your name should be on the screen. Please continue joining games and i hope you have a better time in the future

Windows-key plus D works sometimes better than Ctrl-Esc. This is indeed a very nasty bug in Sheffield.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do not believe it is a simulation bug but is more of a Windows window focussing issue. If you have another window either open or minimized to your toolbar (i.e: Skype, your web browser, etc) and you open the Workstation Control window you have to Alt+Tab out of the simulation to focus the Workstation Control window. This isn't a problem if you've only got any of the paged simulations on your toolbar (it isn't just limited to Sheffield) nor is it a problem if you're running the simulation in windowed mode.
Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for.
