I've just had a lamp failure on signal 12 (Kensal Green Up line). Signal 14 in rear has gone red as expected. But if I operate the replacement switch on 12 then it changes from a hollow 'failed' aspect to a red, and so signal 14 clears to yellow. The same thing happens when I tell a train to PSAD - as it passes 12, 12 goes red and 14 yellow (and then revert to 'failed' and red respectively once the train passes 8).

The other thing is something I've noticed a couple of times but haven't yet had a chance to properly investigate. I'm trying to use the Incident Control Panel to tell trains to disregard the next signal's aspect due to a TCF in an overlap. Sometimes, while they're doing that, I get an error message:

and some (but not all) trains stop moving. The train list shows their speed frozen at whatever it was, but they don't move along the track. Then when I try to start a new game the 'new/load/network' window doesn't appear and I have to restart the sim.

The only thing that might be relevant is that there always seems to be a train stuck on 'about to exit the area' when this happens. I've tried it just now, and the train with the instruction to disregard happened to be the next one to exit - so by the time it exited it had finished passing the signal, and the error message didn't come and everything kept running normally.

Sounds like correct behaviour - generally only one lamp will fail, which sounds like the green in this case (assuming, without checking, that there is a signal 10 between 12 and 8!). When any other aspect is being displayed, all appears in order. However, as soon as the signal clears to a green, the system is unable to prove that signal 12 is alight (because it isn't) and the signal in rear reverts to Danger as expected.

Ah, that'll be it. There's no signal 10, but it was the yellow lamp that had failed. And because the route from 8 to the Bakerloo line can't be set until the train passes 12, it spends most of its time at yellow. Setting the route ahead towards Kilburn High Road clears the signal to green. Thanks!

At the risk of taking this thread off the topic of the remaining bug, what's the correct way to deal with a failed yellow lamp without risking other nearby signals changing aspects unexpectedly? Should the replacement switch be used to hold the signal at red until a train is ready to pass it?

Ah, thanks for clarifying that!

I'd suggest that the correct way to deal with a failed yellow lamp - if, as in this case, the signal can't be cleared to green for whatever reason - is to maintain the signal at Danger using the replacement switch, and to keep it there even when the train is to pass it (there's no point allowing the signal to clear, as no aspect will be displayed anyway!). That way, at least you're never allowing a train to approach a signal that's not alight, and there's no need to caution the Driver at the signal in rear either.

The single lamp failure is a fairly recent enhancement. In the earlier sims a failed signal was black for all aspects. The enhancement means that judicious use of route setting and emergency replacement switches may enable you to keep a train running rather than having the train stop while the driver rings in. Just another job for the poor signaller to do!

I'm rather sure that specific lamp failures aren't a new thing?

I'm just running Stafford and all aspects are black when there is a failure. I can't be bothered to trawl back through all of the old versions I've got archived, but I think that the enhancement only took place in the last couple of years.

Maybe a few years in SimSig, and only those sims with a newer version of "Core Code" (the thing from which all sims run!)

Some of the older sims may still have signals that fail on every aspect as was the norm before more-recent Core Code updates.

They're not incredibly new, but I remember adding them to the core code - plenty of sims don't have them.

I'm not 100% sure, but IIRC Sheffield (the first version) was the first to include aspect failures. Late (Nov/Dec) 2007?
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

At least the North London Line (2005) does not have them, but the current versions of Trent and Sheffield (Feb 2009) do. There are no sims from 2006/7/8 online at the moment to check where exactly it is introduced, but it indeed seems to be around 2007.

Was introduced to the core code around the same time that the Western sims were converted to scrolly sims.

All this talk of signal lamps seems to have drowned out the other problem I mentioned which certainly is a bug...!
