Today I was travelling from Finsbury Park to Oakleigh Park and back and I noticed a couple of things. A trailing crossover on the fast lines south of Alexandra Palace which has been partly taken up, any idea when this was taken out of use? The signals at Hornsey EMU Depot south exit (K426 / K428). Why are these signals along with K419 / K421 at Harringay (up reverse) full colour lights rather than shunt signals? Log in to reply |

I've been through Hornsey Depot on a timetabled service train in full passenger service, so full aspect signals was quite handy :) Rob Log in to reply |

When was that?! I know trains were using the up goods a couple of weekends ago, and also the down goods at Holloway South. Does anyone have any information on the up to down fast crossover at Alexandra Palace? Log in to reply |

If it's the crossover I think you're referring to, I have actually been over it on a passenger train - albeit as part of an almost 3 hour journey from King's Cross to Baldock during some very adverse weather around 3 or 4 years ago. I believe it is a manual crossover (obviously fully interlocked) but has no actual signalled route over it. For emergency use only. From what I can recall (and it's not very detailed I'm afraid) there was a Temporary Speed Restriction over it for a few weeks around 2 years ago, and shortly after that the crossover was part plain-lined. It has probably been like that since then. Log in to reply |

I've just checked the LNE sectional appendix, and can find no such instruction about running through the Depot, but it could have been lifted. As for the cross over, it is shown in the track plans but unlike all the other cross overs does not have a speed limit marked on it, which would go along with the OOU status. Log in to reply |

It was about 1988 / early 1989 - engineering works betwen Hornsey and Haringay affecting Sunday morning services over a few weekends/ The Up Fast was blocked. Up Slow open for diesel trains only (still HST only in those days!). Up Goods open to electric trains, except the bit next to Hornsey Depot. So I boarded a 313 at Ally Pally, we took the Up Goods to K446 signal, got our instructions from the handsignalman and then pootled through the westernmost carriage siding road (the one nearest to the pallisade fencing, though that didn't exist then), out of the depot at K426 signal, and back to Up Slow via K396 signal. Obviously all the handpoints had been clipped and scotched. A very rare move for service trains, and one that in these days with the "shove 'em on a bus" attitude is unlikely to be repeated any time soon! Rob Log in to reply |

The cross over your looking at, is Wood Green B emergency crossover (Up to Down fast) which like Wood Green A (Up Carridge- Up Goods) was worked from a ground frame. Don't know when it was taken OOU although the Google Maps image still shows it intact.
