I might try that Railmiles - in my bashing days of 75k rail miles a year I did it all by hand in a notebook (the old-fashioned kind that had pages and you wrote on them)! Anyone else use it like that?

Me too- still have all my books somewhere- did attempt to put them on a spreadsheet once. Interesting to see people find in cl444 what we found in a Cl40 / 50 etc etc- can't see it myself ..... in my day.... proper trains ...... bah humbug...

I don't think I even recorded units!
What I'd also really like is a trackbashing app that automatically marked off lines done on a map, that would be cool :)

Or link it to GPS so it'd fill in the route and mileage for you!- And a TOPS App that would diagram your day for you- no need for a "bible" then.

The old GNER website used to list both the headcode and traction type in their timetable section.
I haven't seen any other TOC do this since.

The staff section of the National Rail website does realtime information with reporting numbers, Trainplan train IDs, etc. Password protected, though!

Don't be afraid to ask train drivers or other staff for a train's headcode. Generally speaking they're normally happy to provide it. In-fact a couple of times in the past when getting a train at my local station I would speak to the member of staff in the ticket office and ask for the train's headcode and they would provide it generally without a problem, although I would normally briefly explain the reason behind asking just to ally any unspoken concerns they may have.

And East Coast thankfully still do!
