Would anyone know if there is anywhere I can find old Southern Region signalbox prefix codes? I.E. Hampden Park is CDB, Hastings is EDL. But i'm sure Eastbourne would of been CDC?? And not "E" as it is now.

I'm doing some research in the East Sussex area for a friend and was wondering if anyone knew?

Just added this to another thread- I believe there is historical data within.

I've tried that site but it doesn't have the signal boxes I require. Looking for
Polegate East
Polegate West
Stone Cross Junction
Willingdon Junction
Pevensey Bay
Cooden Beach
and Glynde
Hailsham, Horham, Heathfield and Rotherfield would be a bonus

On another slightly related issue, what is the logic behind how the Southern box prefixes are decided?

It looks like a line code letter plus a box sequence letter.

Indeed, E was East division, C was Central division and W was West Division.

Not every signal box would have had a prefix code, specifically any that closed before having colour light signalling installed. You may well find that those in the list you have put down would have closed way before they were allocated a code letter

Paul

You have to get a red before you can get any other colour

I can understand Polegate Crossing, Berwick and Lewes having obvious prefixes as they had thier areas extended. But Hampden Park had colour lights installed but still keeps the CDB prefix.

Southern Railway had thier prefix system from 1932, the signal boxes i'm interested in closed in the late 1960's early 1970's.
