Southampton in the wee small hours 20/02/2012 at 13:04 #29723

Southampton's default Summer 1993 New timetable certainly gives you value for your donation pound/dollar/euro, as the last train in its 24-hour timetable doesn't appear until nearly 4 A.M.!

Without going into unnecessary detail, I though I'd just mention a few things that caught my attention in the closing hours of this TT:

Some late freight trains manage to find their way into Southampton MCT yard without my having to click the shunter's plunger. Perhaps he was asleep.

2Y59 which enters at 27:20 is not your run-of-the-mill Fareham train. As trains are few and far between at that time, ensure you are not half asleep yourself when it arrives.

I enjoyed playing this sim the second time around and recommend it to Goldilocks and her newbie friends as it is neither too large nor too small, but just right. Thanks again to its developers.

the shunters release is an indicator not an actual button so theres no need to click it.

Thanks, I didn't realize that. When I read the original manual I had the impression it was necessary to click it. Must go back and try it again! I seem to recall that in other sims one had to click the plunger - are there different behaviours for that indicator?

(added) You're right. No need to click the plunger, just send the train on its way.

If the circle is green (i.e. a slot), you have to click it/phone up to light it and set the route. I think the plunger will light by itself not long after a train is routed in. As far as I'm aware, Southampton is the only simulation that uses this type of indicator.

Ah, that's what I was thinking of, thanks. Maybe the non-clickable white indicator is there because Southampton is an early sim.

hiya maxand! glad you're enjoying Southampton, it's my favourite sim as I regularly travel over it - as there are no scenarios/TCFs, i would suggest the following 'custom' scenario - i've played it on the SX09 timetable, and it gets a little hairy in the morning peak but otherwise it's great fun.

the closed section starts from signal 710 on the up slow, onto the up main and ends at the points underneath the blue left arrow ( < ). Stick a reminder on those points and the sigs and you're done. (i'd advise not putting a reminder on the northam junction points as you'll need to use them for the swinging overlaps.)

tip: freight waiting for a gap through the tunnel can be looped in the Down and Up yard reception lines - in the up yard it'll block the up slow points but as the up slow is approach released it isn't efficient to use it for pax:)

hope this has made your Southampton more exciting! have fun

Looks interesting, may need to give that a try myself.

"protips":

1. Replatforming is cool.
2. The xx30, xx33 and xx35 London, Brighton and Romsey trains need to leave together, efficiency = profit :woohoo:
3. since you can't get TCFs or point failures in Soton, i'd recommend having delays right up
4. freight waits for paths. the freight WTT is loo roll during the possession
5. during peaks i'd advise holding freight at entry points, loads of pax using the loops and there isn't a simplifier
6. sending a train that's about to TRTS into an already occupied tunnel section is more efficient than switching the direction of working

these might be 6 duhs but they're for noobs like me

this scenario was inspired by the text accompanying the now defunct Soton 1985 TT. thanks to whoever wrote that maybe i'll update it sometime

Southampton is a great sim - its my local. Moved to Southampton in 1962 and spent many happy hours watching the dying days of steam, and the sight of the Bournemouth Belle. Most trains stopped to take on water. Watched frieights from the bridge at St Denys, coming over the curve of Cobden bridge, heading for the docks or Bevois Yard. Now enjoy steam as signalman on Swanage Railway, and as member of the preserved Romsey Signal Box - recommend the latter if anyone wants to experience operating a traditional signal box - open first Sunday of month. We work it somewhat like a sim but with real levers, block shelf instruments, etc.

Would be nice one day if this sim was upgraded to include Eastleigh, Romsey and Chandlers Ford branch (or should I say ' the main'and down to Botley. But even that will be surpassed soon as it eventually all comes under Basingstoke.

i've been to the romsey signal box! i'd highly recommend it to anyone. great experience.
extending the sim would be great - i love southampton because i can watch the trains that have left my area at Eastleigh go past my window after about 20 minutes
