Hello, I have seen a position on FGW's website for a trainee train planner with a much better wage than I'm on already. To be an apprentice you first need 5 good GCSE's, but I don't know what classes as good, the lowest I got was an F in French. I would like to try and apply but I'm wondering if anyone could kindly give me some help in filling it in, just only for any lack of GCSE's they may see, I want to show myself up in other areas. I don't know if adding SimSig to the application would help, as I have written a few timetables now including diversion ones, and one for Swindon which involved using train running numbers, which gave me the challenge of balancing rolling stock. It doesn't involve staff rosters so I'd imagine the job to be very different to SimSig timetabling but they should train me 100% on it, providing there is a job at the end of the line I assume (or do they just train you for a qualification and then leave you out the door? I don't know how it works) The application also states that you should list the last 5 years of your employment or since you left school, whichever is shorter. Now, I have been in my job for 5 years so that's all I can list, but I would like to show the other work I have done which might help as it was varied, but would they overlook this as providing too much information? This sounds like a challenging job and I wouldn't mind trying my hand at it, maybe with my experience in SimSig and my enjoyment of writing TT's might help? Thank you for any help! James. 5 good GCSE's is normally HR shorthand for 5 at Grades A to C.

Is one of the two GCSEs Mathematics? That is a more relevant qualification for train planning, and could be sufficient if your past work experience is good. Some other tips from your original post: - I would mention SimSig, as it demonstrates enthusiasm/motivation for the role. However, the kind of (and approach to) timetabling you will be doing in the role will most likely be very different to SimSig timetabling, so be careful not to come across as saying 'I know it all already'. Perhaps just saying that you're a member of the SimSig community (briefly explaining what SimSig is, etc.), and the parts that particularly interest you most (i.e. the timetabling) will suffice. - I would briefly mention relevant experience from more than 5 years ago, that demonstrate particular skills asked for in the job advert. Hope this helps! p.s. I've been looking over quite a lot of CVs lately! Log in to reply |
