..... could end up starting from / terminating at the older part of Bristol Temple Meads, thereby returning that part of the station to its original purpose. Any thoughts?

Its a good idea in that it keeps the proposed BTM-BPW-PADD services to one side of the station without crossing whatever layout there will be once the knitting goes up everywhere.
When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

Ah, now if the sparkies were to run via Bristol Parkway then the use of the shed for such starts to make more sense. Otherwise you'd have all the terminating trains crossing over the cross countries and other through services. They neglected to mention the routing on Points West tonight.

For those unaware, the old shed is on the platform 1 side of the station. The Paddington-Bristol trains tend to terminate in the higher numbered platforms. I think you'd only get 2-3 platforms in there though. Map here.

Thinking about it, elecrification or not, the Filton bank is pretty busy all day, so with the step forward being made power-wise, one can only hope that 4-tracking from Dr Drays is bought back to cater for extra traffic (in particular heavy freight). Adding these trains in, and any subsequent service development by FGW or the next franchise incumbent will result in saturation of paths available.

Well I am thinking it would make sense, although it would still involve some conflicting moves getting the Padd-BTM via BPW train into the "new" platforms, unless a dive-under or fly-over is built somewhere, but trying to remember my geography of the area, that could pose difficulties.

The GWR RUS still has the proposal in it to four track from Parson Street to Filton Jn. Or to quote directly from it: Quote:

Will the Line via Chippenham and Bath be included or will the HST's stay on the Route Paddington - BTM via Bath?

They're wiring via Bath to BTM, via Parkway to South Wales, and connecting Parkway and BTM up.

The GW main line is via Chippenham and Bath; the South Wales main line to Cardiff is to be included.
