Major disruption Woking-Farnbough following cable fire after attempted cable theft. BBC News Item There were also major problems on Monday between Weybridge-Hersham after a cable fault (not a theft that time) I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Log in to reply |

Pretty awful week for SWT. The latest train I saw yesterday was the 1920 WAT-EXD, which arrived EXD 0319, 274 late. The problems were compounded by people jumping out of trains and wandering all over BML1 preventing any rescue movements taking place. Log in to reply |

It's pretty stupid trying to steal cables from a railway line. With the power going through some of them. Of course if a few more theives managed to electrocute themselves, the rest might get the message.

But then NR would be prosecuted for H&S breaches. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

I don't think they would Peter Network Rail may be asked why their cables aren't secured more, but that would be easy for any competent lawyer to avoid.

I'm aware of a number of measures NR are taking to limit cable theft but with tens of thousands of miles of cable across the network, it's not going to happen quickly. It does also require the co-operation of the scrap industry to refuse to buy marked cable if the first prevention methods are somehow overcome.

It will be stopped by better regulation on the scrap dealers, rather than preventative measures NR can take really. The only thing they can feasibly do is make their cable more identifiable - the rest will probably end up costing more than the delay minutes.

Once a cable has been stripped of its various sheathings, there is nothing to identify the source - and there's enough evidence around to show that people do manage to do this successfully. It would also help if NR speeded up fibre-optic cabling. We have had several scrap drums of the stuff at former W Hoathly station site for years. It looks just like copper, but no-one touches it because it is worthless second hand.

Doesn't stop the toe-rags in our part of the world putting an axe through the cable then shooting off in disgust when they find it is fibre-optic, not copper - causing just as much disruption as if they had pulled the cable out.

What is needed is an education scheme to enable the toe-rags to tell the difference. Or maybe identify the f.o. cable to make it easy to tell. Ray Log in to reply |

Unfortunatly we will never be able to do away with the need for copper cable, while fibre optic is used alot, it is only good to carry data, cannot carry the 650V supply to the signalling equipment, that is the favoured cable to be stolen. An intresting fact, the attempted cable theft at sturt lane sub station near farnborough. it was actually an oil filled 33KV feeder cable that was cut. the fire brigade had to attend to put the enevitable fire out, before the cable could be made safe and earthed, The power surge from this cable being cut knocked out part of guildford panel (ash lines), aldershot box, ash vale box, and the fringe between woking and basingstoke ASCs. Although most was restored fairly quickly, the surge caused major damage to signalling equipment where basingstoke fringes with woking, this is what took the time to repair. Incidently who ever cut that cable would have been seriously burned and left site empty handed . . Is it worth it! Log in to reply |
