Hello chaps,

Can somebody contact me please? I have purchased the Derby sim from the donationware section, but all I get is 'Thank you for your purchase'.

How do I get my habds on the software?

Regards,

Neil

Hi Neil,

You can download all currently available sims, with or without making a donation, from the Downloads section - click Downloads at the top of this page and browse or search for the ones you want. If you haven't installed the system files you'll also need to do that first before installing any sims.

Derby is still in development and not available for public download yet. A beta version of it was previewed at a meet last year but it's not generally available.

Hi Neil, you need to go into Downloads section but I've just checked in there and can't find Derby as I've tried to download it myself.

As I understand it, one does not donate in order to gain access to the sim but rather to contribute towards the development of said sim. I hope that clears things ups.

Nope, sorry - doesn't compute. The donationware section allows stand-alone donations or to select sims by region. That implies you get someting for your money.

As Josie said, all sims are available free through the downloads section (Derby is not on public release yet). The donation section of the website quite clearly explains that the donations are to help run the site and give back something for all the hours the developers give in producing the sims. You can donate genrally to SimSig or if you want to donate to the developers of a certain sim, you can then choose a specific simulation.

A donation is that "a donation" like when you donate to a charity appeal etc.

Oh dear, I'm into a debate when all I wanted was to buy something.

Two things to consider:

1. Please note that this page says 'Donationware Simulations': http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_hikashop&ctrl=category&task=listing&cid=10&name=donationware-simulations&Itemid=259

2. Read this definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donationware

Can you understand why I thought I was buying something?

I wasn't trying to make it into a debate and apologise if it appeared that way. I was assuming you had seen the donation page in the shop menu with the descriptions about donations. I hadn't gone into the browse menu section so didn't know it was laid out as donationware sims page that you went via until your link.

It's OK. I apologise for getting a bit nowty. Considering the fun I have had with SimSig, I am most definitely not going to begrudge you a fiver, indeed I'm suddenly feeling like a bit of a skinflint.

You see, I'm itching to get my hands on Derby. There's this branch leaving the MML at Duffield that I want to timetable-in loads of DMUs...

:)

Apologies for the confusion over Derby. If you would like a refund then I am happy to do so. I have hidden Derby from the Shop.

No donation required: I've had much more than a fiver's-worth of fun out of your simulations over the past few years.

That would be the Wirksworth branch - freight only now it's a preserved line. I used to work that branch when i was a guard at Derby

It's a valid point about the word 'donationware' and I don't think you're the first person to be confused by it - perhaps it might be a good idea to rename the section to something like 'donations for specific sims', or to add a note on the shop page (if possible) to make it superobvious at point of 'purchase' that this payment isn't to gain access to any particular download?

(Also I've just been looking at the shop and I can't see any way to add anything from the shop to a shopping cart - am I being dim or has something changed in the refurb?) Edit: not just me.

In the 8 (?) years that SimSig has been donationware, only 3-4 people have ever admitted to being confused by it, out of tens of thousands of downloads. Indeed the link provided earlier about donationware says "an optional donation" (my stress) - does that not imply rather heavily that no money need exchange hands in order to obtain the software?

I think the confusion in this case was quite justified in that something was in the shop and wasn't available to download. That was an oversight which I've already corrected - if anything it's usually the other way around.

For some weird reason Hikashop decides to add a Joomla module when somebody adds a product to their cart that hasn't been added before - and it doesn't set it up properly either. I've found the solution and fixed it now, though didn't fancy reading the rather long winded version of why adding the module was necessary.

Fair enough. And this thread has done a good job of reminding me that it's been a while since I last donated - will sort that in a bit.

Geoff,
Don't think you have sorted the problem. I have just tried to add something to my cart as a general donation. It recognises that I want to use Pay Pal but when I press next it keeps asking for a billing address. Fair enough, but there is no where that I can click to do this. Hitting the next button twice as advised also does no good and you end up with the same scree. I ain't hitting the next buttin more than a few times in case a payment is going through.

Is there a 'NEW' button visible under the Billing Address section (top left)?

Andy,
Got that but then the required fields just want too much information. Sorry, but who is wanting all of this information and where does it go before I start giving out telephone numbers

It will be PayPal that will want it to verify with your card.

It seemed happy to have 000-000 for the tel no. when I tested it, I think it's just the default pro-forma for now until GeoffM looks at the detail set-up, and seems to be just for SimSig invoice generation rather than the PayPal...but don't quote me on that!

Would like to think so, but I had not got as far as signing into my Pay Pal account so why would it want verification at that point that it was me. It is not that I don't mind giving out certain information but it would be nice to know who wanted it and who had access to it. Simple question, is it Sim Sig? Because I cannot understand why. Last time I gave a donation I don't remember being asked for it, or being contacted in any way after I made the donation.

I can't see any way to disable a billing address. That stage of the process is internal to SimSig; nobody, not even PayPal, see that address. Only SimSig admins (3 including me) have access to it. As you say, we haven't used the addresses before and would only do so in future if there was some sort of problem.

Geoff,

I note you said you had removed Derby from the donations page. I can still see it listed under London-Midland region.
