Hello all, I've just started work on a 2012 TT, and a quick look at Open Train Times has thrown up a problem at Gloucester. Looking at the night 1st August-2nd August (I can't use this week, since there appear to be late night engineering works on the Bristol line), the following doesn't make sense: 2E30, 2G99, 5G90, 5G93 and 2G95 all terminate at Gloucester, however no ECS trains are booked to leave. 5C08, 2G79 and 2C63 leave in the morning, with no empty trains to form them. They don't stay in their platforms overnight, because a handful of late night/early morning trains use platforms 2 and 4. I'm guessing that the trains are stabled at Gloucester and re-formed overnight, and that there are untimetabled moves to a stabling point somewhere in the Gloucester area. Does anyone know where this point is, or what actually happens? Thanks in advance for any relpies. I too had a look on Open Train Times, and no ECS trains were there as it is a short trip. Most of mine was guess work but a couple of trips are still used and are in an old diagram sheet I have. These empties came form/went to Gloucester C.S, so I put mine in the CS road just below where Platform 4 is on the map. I have seen units stabled there before, but that was in Wessex Trains days, and haven't been up there in the morning/at night since but I would guess the C.S used is still that one. Is it a weekday or weekend TT? For trains arriving at close intervals into the station, I will couple them up and send them paired over to the C.S as I assume this would happen but I'm not a brain box for this so I don't know if that is correct otherwise, as my diagram sheets do not cover the 2012 period. Hi Steamer, I've found some old diagrams from 2008 which may help you. Obviously in the 4 years since then, times and stock may have changed slightly but here's what I've found so far 5G93 - 23+04 Cheltenham Spa - Gloucester CS (arr 23+45)(Glouc 23+26 - 23+40) 2G95 - 23:33 Swindon - Gloucester. Then forms 5G95 00+25 Gloucester - Gloucester CS (arr 00+30) 2G79 - Formed by 5G79 05+45 Gloucester CS - Gloucester (arr 05+55) The others that I haven't found (perhaps change in headcodes since 2008) I guess would follow the same pattern as those above. Hope this helps. G Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Steamer |

Thanks for the replies, I'll invent some trips to the C.S. Underwood said: Weekday. I've been looking at the night Wednesday 1st August- Thursday 2nd August, since there are late night engineering works this week. TimTamToe- combining your info and Open Train Times, I reckon this seems plausible: 2E30 arrives 2301, in P2. It then shunts to P1 to clear P2 for 2G75 (2311-2313) 5G90 arrives 2318 in P1 and joins the stock of 2E30 5G93 arrives 2327 in P2. 5G90+stock ex-2E30 then shunted back into P2 and attached. 5G93 departs 2340 "Don't stress/ relax/ let life roll off your backs./ Except for death and paying taxes/ everything in life.../ is only for now." Ah, mine is a weekend so slightly different. I actually forgot there is diagrams from 2008 on line too. Looking in the WTT though those moves seem feasible. Also I believe there is a FGW 'hot spare' unit (or there was in 2011) on weekdays too (I'm sure it's not on weekends) that stays in the area for a most of the day, and then forms a service out of Gloucester later on. If it helps, I have seen this once (a Class 153). This was parked up in the 'Loco Spur' (by platform 1), but whether this is normal I don't know. Log in to reply |

Thanks for those Noel, however there are a couple of inconsistencies with Open Train Times: Platform 2 is required by 2G75 (Cheltenham-Cardiff) 10 minutes after 2E30 arrives, however 5E30 doesn't leave until 23:55 In the morning, 5L43 (operated by ATW) stops in P4 for 5 minutes and detaches carriages. 2M20 departs 5 minutes after 5L43, suggesting it is formed by 5L43. Doubtful you'd see any FGW stock attached to ATW stuff these days. The Horsebox siding was also used to stable a unit or 2 but whether it still is I'm not sure

Open train times and all similar systems use the base WTT which has inconsistencies with the platform numbers. What I've posted above are the booked workings.

The WTT platforms can bear absolutely no relation to the actual platforms used by services. At Victoria (Central/Brighton side), we get a list of the daily orders which can change day-to-day and/or week-to-week, depending on what Southern want to do with their stock - the WTT platforms go completely out the window. And when it all goes arse-over-tit, re-platforming is very common. So don't put too much (if any) trust in the WTT platform numbers.

Just to echo what Matt has said, overnight on the Southeastern side at Victoria we just run the last arrivals into the platform and leave them there for the morning instead of sending them to the sidings. They can be cleaned just as easily in the platform as the shed, and it saves a lot of unnecessary shunting back and forth. Less work for the signaller, shunter and driver. Everybody wins - well, except me... I get nothing out of it
