Excellent educational video from Network Rail explaining signalling,

featuring

Uttoxeter Lever Frame Signal Box,

Derby Power Signal Box

and Ashford IECC.

Find it on YouTube using the link below,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4q3i5aw6XQ

or search for words of the title

"Controlling Trains - Network Rail engineering education (3 of 15)".

Now - a spotters question for you - where is signal L107?

Impressed by the subtitles...

Signaller at Ashford picks up the CSR and says: "Hello Driver, yeah, it's the signalman area 83 Ashford, over."

Subtitles come up with: "Hello John, yeah it's sitting on area 83 Ashford, over"

Excellent basic intro into signalling. Love the screenshots at Ashford. If I was unsure how close Simsig is to real life, I certainly aren't now.

A company called Track Access Services Ltd (web-site here) have a subsidiary web-site (RailnetChannel.tv - the Rail Industry Web TV Channel) which contains all sorts of publicly accessible video material grouped under categories like Archive, General Interest, Operation & Traction Training etc.

There is probably further interesting stuff there once the YouTube well runs dry.

Video 8 of 15 is of my colleagues and good friends on the test trains

I was around when they filmed the stuff on the NMT. I was told at the time the videos have been made to target college kids and inspire the youth of today to consider an career on the railway.

Very good video. I particulary liked the chap at Ashford chatting away to the camera while an array of TRTS lights are flashing away on the panel. It's just like when I play Simsig.

That's not quite what the video says:

as a ball park figure around 25% of britain is still under absolute block, tokenless block or electric token block, and accounts for the vast majority of boxes in the country.

im bound to cause outrage, but the GMWL into cornwall past newton abbot, and certainly past plymoth isnt as nearly busy as most primary routes

An interesting video, but did anyone else spot the train "reversing at speed" past the 'box at Uttoxeter, complete with red lights at the front, and the subtitler translating the Uttoxeter bobby's use of the word cable as gape :-)
