I was travelling back from cleethorpes to doncaster earlier on today and just as the train departed from scunthorpe the line witch is like and avoiding line has a signal and it had loads of different lights on it. What type of signal is it?

It's a 'Toton' signal, formerly used in connection with movements over the hump (now disused and disconnected). See here for further explanation.
