Hi all,

Just seeking clarification;

If a WTT/SWB specifies the coaches as either;
VB (Vacuum braked) would these be Mk 1s & ETH be Mk 2s?

I ask as I am looking at a possible Summer Saturday 1985 project
for a WR sim thats all & it would put my mind at rest.

Thanks in advance.

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

I would assume it just means that the coaches require Vacuum Braking and Electric Train Heating to work with the loco - some Mk1s had ETH and some Mk2s had Vacuum Brakes. I presume that Mk1s and 2s were operated in mixed sets?

Sadly not that simple, notes were covering necessary operating issues, like VB in a generally AB world. Earlier timetables showed AB as a deviation in the VB world.

In 1985 Oxford commuter sets were VB and a mad mix of Mk1 and MK2A/B/C, so they might be some of the WR holiday trains you have as VB. They were however all ETH, although academic in the summer. The WTT note should prevent anyone diagramming a 47/3 on them, being an air only loco.

Equally the few Air Con sets on the WR were Mk2 D/E/F and those would have had a 'needs ETH' flag in a WTT, being AB would have been taken for granted.

regards
Bill

The other thing to remember in 1985 was the fact that most if not all the traction units in service by then had had there (Clayton/Spanner/Stones) boilers isolated. So even if one was allocated to a WR bound Holidaymaker train there would have been no heat for the stock anyway. ETH locos would have worked 'ETH' stock & the non ETH stock would be worked by any other dual braked locos. I remember going from Bristol Temple Meads to Salisbury behind a Cl.33/0 hauling 6 Mk.1s & then another Cl.33/0 on a train from Salisbury to Waterloo hauling a rake of mixed Mk.1s & Mk.2A/B/Cs. Come back all is forgiven. The Norwicj - Birmingham New Street services around 1985 were hauled by 'PEDS' with rakes of Mk.1s or Mk.2A/B/Cs & on occasions the sets were mixed, but were vacuum braked. Hellfire much better the the ridiculous Cl.156 2 car sets that replaced them.

Yes, by 85 steam heat had ended in most places, just hanging on in the Scottish extremities until the 37/4's appeared. However plenty of NB action in (theoretically) warmer weather !

There were still boilered tractors working in Scotland during 1985. Here's a picture I took at Crianlarich in September 1985 with a steam heat tractor waiting for our train to clear the line with another steam heat tractor. Note the 'Mexican Bean'in the station loop. Those were the days.

Further to the above our train back from Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street hauled by tractor 37191 steaming away prior to departure. Loco carried the name 'International Youth Year 1985' only for that year. On a rake of Mk.1s in September 1985.
