Those vehicles are Eastern Region Motorail vans known as TCVs. There were alot of them at the south end of York station where the Motorail unloading area was. These vehicles were phased out by the late 1980s. I think they ran between York & Aberdeen, but were based on the BR Mk.1 coach.

I've got a pic scanned from a magazine of A3 60099 entering Newcastle on the Southbound Car-Carrier so that will give a clue about how long ago they were introduced. John that photo of 50044+50049 at Derby. IIRC was Saltley driver Micky Naughton working it forward from Derby? As I remember getting in the cab of 50049 before the off talking to the driver. Seemed to remember it being a Saltley driver I know.
