 The best maintained Cl.47 in the country according to Mr. Paul Northover who at that time was maintenance supervisor at Didcot. 47016 'ATLAS' stands at toton TMD on 130497. Paul devoted alot of spare time looking after this engine when it was part of Stratford's EWAS pool. I first got to know Paul when he was maintenance supervisor at Ripple Lane TMD when I was Senior Traction Controller at Liverpool Street Regional Control Office.  One of my favourites 58050 'Toton Traction Depot' the loco at this time was probably the newest on the network seen here inside the Toton Training School also known as 'the playpen'. I nicknamed this engine 'the pride of the fleet' when I was loco controller with Mainline Freight at Nottingham. Cl.58s were by far the best type 5s in the country with availability around the 90-95% most of the time. Also they had the best ride for smoothness of any loco I've ridden on. This engine was the last locomotive built by Doncaster Works & as a result is earmarked for the National Collection, which means when she has finished her working life (at present in Spain) she will go to the NRM at York.  Whilst touring depots around the north west of England we came across this class 03 shunter parked next to an open level crossing at Duke Street in the Birkenhead Docks. Anybody could have just climb aboard. Behind me when I took this photo was a row of terraced houses on both sides of the street.  45129 was our loco this day loading ballast at Cliffe Hill Sdg. Whilst waiting to depart for Mantle Lane Sdgs at Coalville to run round I took a photo of 58007 heading towards Bagworth Colliery for loading on 090986. Little did I know 8 months from the day this photo was taken I was the secondman on this engine when we got a call to rescue a failed Cl.56 on the Down Fast Line at Radlett Junction working a Hoo Junction - Derby St. Marys Speedlink service. I rememver speaking to the signalman at West Hampstead who told us to be quick as he was putting us in front of a HST. Peter Gordon was the driver & I told him what the PSB had said. With that he opened the power handle to full power on 58007 & we were off, we crossed Bedford South Jn from Slow Line to Fast Line, by the time we were approaching Millbrook we were doing 100mph. Pete said to me if you hear bits falling off you know Cl.58s can't do 100mph as there max speed was only 80mph. Anyhow to cut a lonfg story short Bedford to Radlett Junction was done in about 19 minutes. The HST we were put in front passed us on the Up Fast as we were heading back north dragging the failed train on the Down Slow at Radlett Redlands Terminal. Post has attachments. Log in to view them.
