58003+58042+37038 at Bescot Holding Sdgs on 140986. Funny how locos suit some liveries better than others. However in my opinion red stripe railfreight was the best livery for Cl.58s, followed by Mainline Freight blue, then Trainload Coal livery & finally EWS livery. But see what you think. Finally 58049 'Littleton Colliery' at Worksop on 220896. This time in EWS livery. Believe it or believe it not Cl.58s had the highest availability of any of the british built type 5s in traffic. However I can say with some authority that even time they painted a Cl.58 into this livery the loco suffered appaling failure rates. I often wonder when I was on the power desk were the locos telling us something. From 1995 - 2001 covering the Yorkshire/Humberside & East Midlands locos 58016, 58033, 58048, 58049 & 58050 all had dubious spells of failing in traffic once they had received this livery. However the whole fleet went down hill once they had been moved from Toton to Eastleigh. By this time the writing was on the wall for these excellent machines. Post has attachments. I've lost the details of this loco, but I took the photo when I was at the 1988 Bescot Open day which shows collision damage to the No.1 end cab of this Cl.31/1. If anyone out there knows the number of this engine I'd appreciate them telling me so I can update my records. Post has attachments. Log in to view them. Log in to reply |

I seem to recall a couple of stabled Cl31's ran away somewhere around London with one of them ending up on a main road, breaking its back. Is this the one of the two locos involved? From what I remember of the pictures at the time they were in original Railfreight grey colours so it's certainly possible. Had a quick search on internet but couldn't find any details.

Your thinking of the two Cl.31s that ran away at Cricklewood & ended up on the North Circular. It isn't one of those. 31222 was one of the Cl.31s involved at cricklewood when some gipsies who were camped opposite the depot had climbed on board the two locos to strip them & subsequently took the handbrakes off them.

Yes, I thought it was the North Circular they ended up on but wasn't sure if the old grey matter was playing tricks on me. However, I thought it was on the ER rather than the MR so thanks for jogging the memory. Sorry I can't help you in your quest to identify the loco in your picture.

It could be 31261 Joe, but just don't have the records anymore. Unless someone on here was also at the Bescot 1988 Open Day event then they may have a record of it.
