This photo was taken from Hundred Drove which is a public road that ran past the rear of march TMD. There was no fences or anything so you had a good view of pretty much everything on the depot. This photo shows the West end of the repair shed which had 3 tracks either side & could accomodate 2 locos on each road. To the right behind 56088 is a 2 track shed where locos could be fuelled & had inspection oits. Photo taken summer 1987.

31237 rounds the curve from March West junction with 8E15 1115 SX Dept'l Mountsorrel Sdgs - Bury St. Edmunds Recp. This train was usually the first arrival after dinner into Whitemoor Yard, conveying the usual vacuum braked Catfish & Dogfish hoppers loaded with rail ballast. On arrival at Whitemoor the loco either went onto the TMD or just ran round the train prior to its afternoon departure from Whitemoor. The train in the meantime underwent C&W examination.

This photo shows one of the March Cl.08s propelling repaired empty polybulk(PIB) wagons from Marcrofts wagon repair gacility at March Yard back into Whitemoor Yard. There were 2 Cl.08s stabled in Whitemoor Yard. One was used around the clock for shunting in the yard & the other used to trip wagons to & from March Yards as required incl. Marcrofts wagon repair facility which was located opposite March east Junction signal box, (last I heard it had been converted into a loco servicing facility for GBRf). However on late turn both Cl.08s were used for shunting & preparing trains in Whitemoor Yard. The 'GRAINFLOW' fleet of polybulk wagons were based at Whitemoor Yard & conveyed grain from several loading points in east Anglia for the conveyance of grain to Scotland for the Scottish distillers to produce whisky.

Slight change of scenery & I remember thiese photos like it was yesterday. The Cl.56 in the 1st picture is 56064 working 6M32 0335 MX MGR Northfleet BCI - Toton Down Sdgs Low Level empties. I was driving the train back to Bedford after we had worked this train from a set of loaded wagons left in Cricklewood Recess the night before. It was now a Saturday morning. Upob departing Northfleet the yellow fault light keep flashing on the driving desk of the Cl.56 as I was opening the power controller. This happened quite a number of times as we were exiting the Blue Circle terminal. I mentioned it to the driver & we continued on our way back. However when we got to Factory Junction we were held there for other trains to cross the junction. When we got the proceed aspect I released the train brakes & applied traction power, but the train wouldn't move. After several attempts U got onto the SPT & advised the signalman we were having problems & would contact him again shortly after we had carried out some investigations. We then detached the loco from the train to see if the engine would still move when we took off the brakes as we were on a falling gradient, but still nothing happened. What happened in the finish a van arrived with about a dozen fitters from selhurst T&RSMD even though Stewarts Lane TMD was a stones throw away. The traction motor on the leading axle of the front bogie had seized. Obviously the wheelslip indication when we were departing Northfleet was due to this problem although we were still moving. In the finish it was decided that we'd leave the train there & slide the loco onto Stewarts Lane TMD after the P. Way supervisor had greased the rails so the locos seized leading axle would skid on the grease. Every time you applied power the amps would go up & then fall off as the loco thought the seized axle was slipping & on Cl.56s & Cl.58s as soon as you got wheelslip the power would be cut off. So we ended see sawing onto Stewarts Lane TMD & left the loco there. The train was moved to Cricklewood Recess by a Cl.33 & Southern traincrew. Whilst we were taxied from Stewarts Lane TMD to Victoria eastern by a Cl.33 as a taxi. This was the only time during my footplate career where the driver, guard & me caught BR for a rest day. We were all booked on a Sunday morning ballast at 00.01 the following day, so the driver eric Webb spoke to the Bedford driver working the unit we caught at King's Cross Thameslink not to arrive at Bedford too early. By the time we walked from the station to the booking on point we managed to get paid another 8 hours for a rest day worked as we were booking off at 12.01pm Saturday afternoon to have the mandatory 12 hours rest so we could catch the 00.01 booking on time for Sunday morning ballast & having been on duty since 22.26 Friday night. Doubtful that you'd get away with that today. Happy days when it was BR.
The other 2 photos I took are taken from the cab of the failed Cl.56 of Cl.33s passing Factory Junction whilst we were waiting for the P.Way to grease the tracks.

Thanks for the pics, particularly the March area. The middle picture of the 33 at Factory Junction appears to be reversed.

Yes I rcv'd the CD of all the 50+ packs of negative I gave to someone I know who sells photos & negatives on e-bay. His wife did the scanning & wouldn't have known the difference. Will re-upload when I get that photo back from being re-scanned. I'll try not to upload any more reversed pictures as there are quite alot.

Here's a picture I took on the Up Goods at Neilsons Sdgs signalbox. I was working 6O74 1528 SX Dept'l Cliffe Hill Sdgs - Tonbridge SS & we were stopped opposite Finedon Yard at Wellingborough where the Toton breakdown crane was re-railing some derailed wagons with a single Cl.20. Photo taken September 1987. Unfortunately I've lost my records of most of these photos so can't remember the engne number on this occasion.

Here's a photo of mantle Lane signalbox at Coalville which controlled movements in & out of the sidings there. AFAIK the box is still there today. I took this picture in September 1987 as we used to run round at Mantle Lane sdgs after loading our train at Cliffe Hill.
With regards to flipping the photo that was reversed. I don't have any software on my PC where I can do that, otherwise I would.

Now here's a couple of pictures taken on the elevated walkway at the coal discharging bunker at Northfleet BCI terminal. The 1st photo shows 56064 going through the discharge hopper at 0.5mph(slow speed setting No.1) with spcl 7Z30 2355 FO MGR Cricklewood Recess - Northfleet in September 1987.
The 2nd photo shows 58027 going through the coal discharging bunker again in slow speed setting No.1 with 7O85 1323 SX MGR Toton New Bank - Northfleet. Northfleet was the furtherest point on the South eastern dicision of the Southern Region Bedford traincrew went. Much to the annoyance of Hither Green traincrews. However Hither Green men at this time didn't sign Cl.58 locos. Something Crompton & I joke about when we meet at SimSig meets. Hither Green men only went as far as Luton in the 1980s on the Midland mainline back then.

This photo was taken in 1987 & shows an overall view of Coalville traincrew depot & Mantle Lane sdgs at Coalville. from left to right:-
Where the wagons are on the left is Mantle lane Sdgs & you can see mantle Lane signalbox in the background.
The 2 tracks immeadiately to the right of the semaphore signal are the main running lines betweenKnighton Junc, Leicester & Burton on Trent. Where the Cl.58s are stabled is Coalville loco holding sdgs & the potacabin buildings to the left of the Cl.58s is Coalville traincrew depot.

I thought I'd add this picture as it shows a Cl.37 working 9H35 1110 SX SLK Wisbech East - Whitemoor Yard trip working. What was unusual about this working was that it was the only time I ever saw a train get signalled onto the headshunt line at Whitemoor Junction in all the time I worked at Whitemoor Yard as well as all the times I went there to photograph trains. The other unusual thing about this trip is the fact that it is being worked by a Cl.37. 90% of the time the Wisbech branch workings were worked by Cl.47s. The 2 tracks bearing off the the left next to the loco were what remained of the now closed M&GN Joint line to Spalding & beyond. The majority of the freight traffic went via that route, but when that line closed in the mid 1980s everything ran via Peterborough. Despite the trains that ran over the Wisbech branch were all classified as Cl.9 there were in fact fully fitted & ran at 35mph.
