Hi All and just a please Can a bit of notice be given if it is possible, for sessions ? I only check in 3 or 4 times a week and frequently any multiplayer sessions have come and gone and I have no way of making time for the ones coming... If I had some notice I could possibly join in... Thanks. Log in to reply |

quite a few people, myself included, will not be able to give that prior notice, purely becuase we dont plan a host. if i get home, have the spare time, and am in the mood, ill host, if not, or theres a host already open, then i wont. the most notice i would ever give is around 2 hours becuase of this. all i can suggest is popping in more frequently. if you have the time to join a game for a couple of hours, pop into the forum a couple of times an hour if your free to do so anyway. I think you can subscribe to the hosting forum so you'd get email if somebody posts there. Unfortunately some people advertise elsewhere like a particular closed group on Facebook (you have to belong to the group owner's "inner circle" for that one). I'm open to ideas of how game notifications could be spread though - whether we can hook up a Twitter feed or something. SimSig Boss Log in to reply The following user said thank you: andyb0607 |

As Geoff mentioned the facebook Group - I didn't - the facebook Group is open to all. Search for SimSig.

The idea of a Twitter feed you've mentioned sounds interesting. While I'm here did you get my email from the other day? There is an official SimSig facebook page, and then there are some others which are not so official. The official one has open membership.

Incorrect. The facebook Group Geoff referred to is open to all, as I said earlier. The community page has little activity, while the Multi-Play Group is active and open to new members.

Please remember not everyone uses Facebook. I'm sure it's great for organising sessions between those who do, but if you want as many people to join as possible I don't understand what's wrong with using this website. A system which used Twitter to generate notifications about posts here would be perfect, I think. As far as I'm aware Twitter isn't the 'walled garden' that Facebook is, so people wouldn't need to be Twitter users to look at it, but more importantly it's well suited to providing quick notifications to draw people's attention to new information being posted here on the forum. It's a long story, Josie, which does not need to be repeated. facebook is an alternative, not a replacement.

I think we need to be a bit careful here before we go shooting off in all sorts of directions. It may be that some who host are quite happy with the level of play (and the number of players) generated by posting through this medium and would not be keen to have the details opened up to a wider audience through the likes of a Twitter feed. By all means widen the scope for those who are willing to have the details broadcast to a larger audience but there may be well be those who do not want details of their hosting going out in this way and may move to other ways of communicating with their normal "player group" so they fall off the wider SimSig radar altogether. As a revolutionary thought, if someone cannot fit in a multiplay session due to their other commitments conflicting with a session advertised to the host's timescale, perhaps they could host their own session and enable others to join them rather than vice versa. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply |

Anyone can join a so-called "closed" Group in facebook. "Closed" means that the Group posts are not visible to the general public. This is done to protect IP addresses when members post on the Group wall. Anyone can join a so-called "closed" Group. Membership is controlled by the moderators, in exactly the same way as here on SimSig. Join the Group and find out for yourself what is happening and don't be put off by doom-mongers.

This is in danger of getting a bit tetchy and digging up the past. I think the answer to the point is for the controller of the relevant group to clarify in an open and transparent way exactly how people can access the group and provide a direct link to that group. Then people can take a view as to whether they wish to participate. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Hooverman |

Thank you, Peter. There is no intention to go over the past. My posts have been strictly factual. For people who have a facebook account, type SimSig in the "search for people, places and things" box at the top of the page. A list appears of everyone and everything with the name SimSig in it. Click on the "SimSig Multi-Play Group". To join the Group - click on the tab "Join Group" (which was at the top right, last time I saw it.) There may be a few hours before the moderators see your request to join. They will see it eventually, so please be patient. The aim of the Group is to have frequent on-line games. The Group plays SimSig. Join the Group and see for yourself. Log in to reply |

I try to post details of a session at 2-3 hours in advance. Any earlier increases the chances of cancellation due to an unforeseen change of my circumstances. The earlier I post, the greater the risk of cancellation. I would sugest when you are in a position to join a session check this shout box (Why shout and not chat or even talk? Shouting is considered to be bad manners to the point of rudeness) and the recent posts

Back to the initial query in the first post on this topic, when I used to host multiplayer far more often than I do now, I tended to decide almost at the last minute "lets host x tonight" and put a thread up at that point. The reason I generally did not advertise them in advance was due to not really knowing I was going to host in advance. Sometimes, especially with bigger sessions such as when all five Western Region sims were chained together, or where someone ran Kings Cross for twenty-four hours non-stop, there has been far more advance publication. Having possibly only just come across this thread today (although I may have previously seen it before, but never got around to posting anything in it), I've done a little bit of research and I'm currently testing an unofficial Twitter feed I've set up for hosting notifications posted on the forum. The test is already underway now, so I'll be watching it closely over the coming few days to see how that goes. If anyone would like to 'follow' it (you'll need to either already have a Twitter account, or you'll need to register for one), please PM me - although if you are going to 'follow' it I'd appreciate it if you could also please provide some feedback on it whilst it is under test. Even if you're not on Twitter, and don't want to register for an account, or don't want to follow this test account, you can still help with this testing by hosting an actual session and posting a hosting notification with a proper thread title ("Subject"). I'll hopefully be able to report back this coming Sunday (or early next week at the very latest) how things are going. So, I guess all I'll say for now is watch this space(?!) Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. The facebook group that I used to run was closed by Geoff using copyright as a pretext. He didn't like people playing SimSig outside his control.
