The Robin Hood line today has suffered "a signalling problem" according to National Rail Enq. They even have a picture link to the damaged equipment. Anyone know what this equipment is ? It looks like batteries to me.

The NX650/BX650 tells me it's a 650V supply of some sort, probably for signalling as the report suggests.

Looks like someone did not tighten up something up well enough! Just a mild case of burning.

Who forgot to torque up the connections.

I have seen lightning do that to those Cammaster fuse holders as well.

BX and NX signifies an AC supply, with 650 being the voltage.

Modern UK signalling installations use 650vac single phase distribution generally, which is then transformed down to 110vac in each location, and then further still to various dc voltages as required.

It's the 650v supply cubical in a signalling apparatus case. The 650v supply which runs from cabinet to cabinet along the railway line will come in on one pair of links and go out on the other set (hence 4 links). The links look like this

The red switch will isolate the supply for the particular apparatus case.

The 650v runs all lineside signalling equipment so with that failure you would have lost everything.
