I have purchased the multibuy pack and look forward to playing it when I get the licences from Geoff... I remember having to pay for Simsig waaaaaay back and think I ended up purchasing them all before it all went the donation/free way!

I have one question over the way the licencing will work, I do use Simsig on about 3 PC's depending where I am at the time (Laptop/Desktop/Work Laptop.. *cough*) from what I can see with the program we can use unload and load the Licences from each PC as we use it, is this correct? just wanted to ensure that if I was playing something on my desktop then wanted to go play on a laptop round a friends house that it wouldn't get its knickers in a twist and stop working...

Thanks

Jamie

Good man! I'm sure you don't need any sleep.....!
Four hours... <yawn>

I'm back on the case, between feeding the kids, feeding myself, dispatching said kids to their respective preschools/kindergartens - just give me an hour or two!

It's been a mostly postive response, both in terms of comments, and purchases. Thank you for bearing with us with these hiccups.

Just one question from my side: What is going to be the policy for future updates/refreshes, especially as far as bug-fixes are concerned, but also regarding general (core code) feature updates?
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Does the post from Clive at #47 (or #46 or #48 depending on whether the Kunena bug has been fixed yet) shed any light for you?

Ok, all licenses purchased so far have been issued, plus for those who donated.

A note about the emails when ordering through PayPal. You should receive three emails:
1. Order creation from SimSig. This simply indicates that you have reached the check out stage. As the text inside implies, you have not paid yet. I plan to get rid of this email as it's not very helpful.
2. Order confirmation from SimSig. This is after you have paid and contains the personalised download links.
3. Payment receipt from PayPal.

The most important, in terms of getting hold of the sims, is the second one - the confirmation email. If you don't appear to have received it, please check in your junk mail box. Failing that, email scotland@SimSig.co.uk with your details so I can look it up. For some reason a couple of people haven't received the second email but have definitely paid; others are receiving them fine.

Going for the multipack - the amount of hours of joy I've had from Edinburgh make it well worth it!

PS - the link from the homepage simply goes to a blank page with a link to "HikaShop , Joomla!™ Shopping Cart Extension"

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

It also concerns me where our money is going. If 50 people buy your GBP 30 package, that's GPB 1,500. I know from running my own server that it doesn't take that much money to run a server.
The majority of the money goes to the sim developer, who may have his own costs and may be passing some of it on to others. A proportion goes to the core code development team, and the server is funded out of that. This is the same thing as happens with donations.

Quote:

Also it's not donation-ware anymore, but rather Retail software. That's a whole different ballgame. I really hope, for SimSig's sake, that this has all been thought out properly. While I do respect your decision, you're reluctant to tell us the reasoning behind it. Forgive me, but it does seem a very strange move from the SimSig team.
The decision between paid and donation is done on a per-simulation basis. The fact that one developer has chosen to start charging for a simulation does not mean that there will be no more free ones.

I'll go further than that: when I release the sim I am now working on [1], I will not be making it paid. The next refresh of each of my existing sims will also be donation-ware. I'm not saying that I'll never start charging for a sim, but Cambridge, Royston, Peterborough, Drain, Euston, WembleySub, and project Q [2] won't be charged for while I'm responsible for them.

[1] It'll be ready when it's ready.
[2] The "Q" is *not* a clue. Trust me.
A chunk also goes to Mr Osborne (not personally)- so you are helping to pay off the National Debt.

I have a venerable system still running XP. On this system, sims written on later core code like this new batch of McSims sometimes stick on loading with the splash screen and set-up window locked in the front of the screen. I can get round it by right-clicking on the sim .exe file, selecting "properties", and on the Compatibility tab checking the box and setting the compatibility mode to Windows 2000 then re-starting the sim. It doesn't happen every time and doesn't happen with every sim so it is one of life's unexplained mysteries, but the compatibility fix seems to clear the problem.

In case anyone is not sure about the missing .bpl files that Geoff posted earlier, on my system everything works if you drop them into the Windows\System32 folder.

That's a matter for each developer, as is whether to charge or not in the first place.

What I can say is that I have no plans to charge for bug fixes nor minor updates. Also just because I charged this time does not necessarily mean I will for other Sims in the future, that's not to say I will not either; I've not decided either way.

Is that Ozzy or does George Osborne get a share?

(PS Bit off typoing your boss's name, isn't it?)

Just checked - your licenses have been granted so when you login to License manager you will see them.

I think we are on top of the license issuing at the moment so pretty much everyone should have them who's ordered - there are sometimes difficulties matching up names and email addresses to usernames so you may get an email asking for confirmation of who you are!

Interesting direction.

Wonder whether "purchase prices" for some Sims will result in lowered "donations" for others. For (hypothetical) example, as an occasional but bursty user of Simsig, I just came on site to see if the donation method was the same for Carlisle as it was for Sheffield/Trent when I last donated. I noticed the SimSig Scotland purchase option. Am I now less likely to donate to Carlisle and instead spend my money on SimSig Scotland, believing that the money goes into the same "bucket"?

I'll probably do both eventually btw. But I won't be buying Scotland until after Christmas.

Part of any donation/payment goes into "the bucket" part does not. Donations are generally multiples of £5, McSim package works out as an average of £7.50 each; but if you have donated to either Edinburgh or CScot in the past 2 years (or whatever it was) then there is nothing to pay.

peter- several semaphore distants are indicated with green rather than yellow, what significance does this have?

the only thing i can assume from their location is that they're fixed?

They are Y when ON and G when OFF. There is a question mark over the Distant at SM47 where on the day of my visit the signal is clearly marked as "fixed" on the panel but has been proven to be non-fixed in photographs subsequent to that date. Currently it's "fixed" in the Sim, though I thought I'd changed that. It makes no material difference to the Sim workings and it's not wrong given the evidence I based it upon.

I'm calling it a night on issuing licenses, Geoff is around but has a day job so don't necessarily expect any further licences till tomorrow night.

Thanks for your patience on this and thanks for the support.
