One highlight for me was the "workshop" and the newspeak management consultant asking KX station staff how they can meet passenger expectation and the "old-timer" saying - run the trains on time and that's all and that's out of my hands! The rest of the attendees then trying to keep straight faces. The other highlight was the ticket office chap trying to have his lunch and being bothered by the reporter. I sat through the whole programme waiting for a look inside the signalling centre. Maybe the BBC couldn't find it?

Watched this on iplayer last night. Quite a few characters featured, but would have liked a more 'technical' feel, ie, a piece on the Powerbox as mentioned by Pilotman, along with other 'behind the scenes' items. It seemed to sink into the usual coverage of passengers berating the staff. Overall, I'm afraid it came over as quite bland.

But if you want a technical feel you have to have technical people making the programme. BTW like the use of the term "Powerbox", which came into use when the first Westinghouse frame was installed in the old signalbox. Log in to reply |

The comment of the train running out of fuel was , as said , priceless! I found that amusing. And I was also surprised to see the brief run in the cab of a Class 91. Didn't think that would have been allowed but seemingly it was.

The BBC ran a week long series of 'behind the scenes' of the railways back in 1988 called 'Railwatch' & at the time I recorded it all on video(VHS). That was far better as it went round Neville Hill depot, Doncaster PSB & other locations. I agree it would have been better showing you inside King's Cross PSB & possibly the Regional Control at York so people can see why certain incidents take a long time to get things on the move again. I wonder if we will see 'Officer Dibble' on the episode covering Reading?

The programme though was about the station, and the people that work there - control/panel don't really fall into that remit. BBC have to make a programme that's relatable to the public, who want human interest stories. To the lay outsider while informative, a visit to the 'box would be quite boring, especially to the casual channel hopping viewer. But a sad story about a cleaner that has never travelled on the train or a retiring dispatcher who worked at the station for 30+ years will capture almost anyones heart. I think it was very well made, yes pity we didn't get to visit the signalbox, but I look forward to next weeks installment. Log in to reply |

Having been part of the Underground series last year, which may even be filmed by the same company, certain aspects such as the brief glimpse inside the 91s cab could be a part of future episodes. They tend to pull small chunks and use them in several episodes, so who knows, there may be more of that cab to come (nice to see it was being sent onto the down slow at New Barnet though, but I doubt it was to allow a FCC service to pass  )Whether the same company is involved or not, it is I suppose heartening to have 2 consecutive spring seasons with railway-related programming on. Just been watching ep.4 WCML on iPlayer, and they've got a lot more about mechanical AB boxes, with a sequence inside Stockport No.2, which seems a busy old place to be! Also had a bit with one of the guys in Blea Moor; I can imagine that starts to get a bit creepy at 3am in the middle of winter... Pity the S&C seems to be reduced to a freight diversion and excursion route these days.

It looks busy but most of the time they're pulling the same levers. I thought the 'call-attention' bell-signal was quaint. Which is why there's also (unofficial) local codes for 'DI in section' and various other ways of letting your mate know you have 'company' arriving. The old DIs knew all about that of course. And occasionally there'd be a young smart alec who'd decide he was going to make his mark. The story goes that one such (a traffic assistant rather than a proper DI) was spotted getting off the train late one night. The bobby promptly put the 'dots' on all round and, anticipating his arrival, put the kettle on. (Well you do, don't you, when you've got company... those old DIs must've had hollow legs, the amount of tea they drank!) Then, of course, he emptied the dregs out of the pot... in the traditional way, out of a window in the corner of the box which was always left open for that purpose. Which, of course, was where the TA was listening
