It also features footage from the Gainsborough Model Railway - including (I believe) a kind of recreation of the loco exchanges with Pendennis Castle!

Repeated at least once during the week and should appear on iplayer as well.

Just watched this program and it wasnt too bad. A few comments though which I know some of you will comment on. Lol

1. Why wasnt Pete Waterman mentioned. He did own Flying Scapheap, sorry Flying Scotsman for a period of time.

2. I still say the loco is not the most famous steam loco but the most well known. Mallard has to be the most famous.

3. I wish the arguement over the first steam loco to reach 100mph could be settled. Was it Flying Scotsman or was it City Of Truro to reach the magic 100?

Unofficially City of Truro, but not verified.Flying Scotsman 100mph was the first confirmed by measurement.

Mind you it would be a miracle with its "42 sq in" of firegrate, think 42 sq ft is nearer the mark...and the subtitles confirmed the narrator's script.

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

At this distance in time from the relevant events, how would you propose to settle the argument? Charles Rous-Marten (who timed the City of Truro run) was working with a 0.2 second stopwatch which over a 1/4 mile timing distance at that speed immediately puts in an error of plus or minus 2.3mph. According to a Wikipedia entry he quotes 8.8 seconds for the 1/4 mile and 9.2 seconds for the preceding 1/4 mile which seems a dramatic acceleration at that sort of speed. All we can say with any confidence is that City of Truro ran at very close to or over 100mph.

We do not know the level of accuracy of Cecil J. Allen's stopwatch but he was unwilling to claim a speed of 100mph from his stopwatch timings (British Pacific Locomotives, Ian Allan, 1962) and the claim was eventually made as a result of an examination of the roll from the dynamometer car. There is no information as to the level of accuracy of that roll so again all we can say at this distance in time is that Flying Scotsman ran at a speed which was timed at 100mph subject to experimental error limits (so AndyG's confirmed by measurement should have that as a caveat).

There is no way to settle that argument now.

not really, it isnt as well travelled. flying scotsman is a household name to the majority of the non rail public (some of which is due to the train, not the loco.) its also been to north America and Australia, which has raised its profile over there as well.

Surely being Famous is being well known, not necessarily having achieved something credible (the cast of TOWIE or made in chelsea are fair case in point.)

Irrelevant, given how long ago it was. whether truro hit 100mph or did 95mph it was still an impressive speed for a four coupled loco. given that speeds of 100mph were regular in the late 20s and 30s, why is first to 100mph more relevant than first to 60mph or 70mph or 80mph?

I would say neither will be setting any speed records anytime soon :whistle:

I have not seen the programme yet but the other half has recorded it for me. It is such a long time ago that
I stood on Darlington Bank Top station beside Flying Scotsman that had just been overhauled by the then North Road works to make it a pride and joy to Alan Pegler. A nice day out trip as a way of saying thank you to all who worked at North Road. Now many years later it is confined and out of sight at the NRM to what the Railway magazine February issue would have us believe more work to an out of line middle cylinder and a possible strip down yet again. How much more money is that going to cost adding to what must be the biggest bottomless pit of money in preservation history. Not what Alan Pegler envisaged all those years ago I think.

Possibly not as regular as you think - expresses timed to go much above 60 seem to have been the exception, not the rule. The Cheltenham Spa Express was only timed at 80mph at its fastest (and that was the Up - the equivalent Down train ran much, much slower); of course, late running and slow starts did bring the actual speed up somewhat!
