Check out this link: link

If you are hosting using a router you will need to set up port forwarding.

Port forwarding can be a pain if more than 1 computer is used therefore I use DMZ: The DMZ area allows you to set up a De-Militarized Zone (DMZ), i.e. a device on your network that is available to anyone on the Internet to access for undefined services.
Note: Running a DMZ presents a potential security risk to your network, so only do this if you're willing to risk open access.

To assign a DMZ host:
Enable the DMZ by ticking the tickbox.
Enter the last field of the IP address of your Host Address. For example if your hosts IP is 192.168.0.154, enter 154.

Note: Entering '0' in Host Address effectively disables DMZ.

I have never had any problems with DMZ and because I have nearly 20 ports to forward, this is the only way, if one uses more than 1 computer.

Putting your router into DMZ is rather extreme to forward ports to more than one computer.

Assigning each machine a statistic IP Address; rather than the DHCP server giving it one at random, then permanently forwarding only the ports which are needed to the correct IP address is a much better method.

It very much depends on your type of router. Could you post your router model?
Some routers (SpeedTouch, on which some BT Homehubs are based) allow assigning a preconfigured program to any computer in the network, others can assign a port to a certain IP address in which case it is often good to use a fixed IP.
