West Coast Railway Company, because they are the only TOC to exclusively operate proper trains.

I've worked on both & I can certainly say from my experience & all those people I worked with would agree with me rather than agree with you. Log in to reply |

I do work on the railway thank you very much, and today there are more trains, alot more passengers, and higher speeds, as well as more scope for problems it must be said, but that down to modern technology being what it is.

BR had lots of loco hauled trains which is slower, and also we're geting lots of plans for better railways. besides transformations. so before this gets out of hand... lets just speak about current TOC's.

There maybe more trains running on the network today, but most of the people you speak to who worked on the railways when it was BR much preferred it then when the railway was run by railwayman & not by accountants & the subsequent mass of paperwork involved in running a train from A to B.

" said:BR had lots of loco hauled trains which is sloweryou cant surely be suggesting a class 170 could be faster than a Ped on 5 from cambs to new st. on a serious note, loco hauled services are far more flexible operationally compared to units, and are usually slower, becuase theyre also longer. for me it would have to EMT, with northern a close second "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply |

" said:Not always- it's much easier to couple two units as part of a service than it is to join two loco hauled trains together. Also, you can turn a unit around anywhere, whereas a loco-hauled train requires either a loop (while the loco gets in the way of other traffic) or a second loco to release it, unless a DVT or similar is used. The type of train is just an engineering answer to a complex problem which has to find the best balance between seating capacity (or tonnage to be hauled for freight), power source, distributed power throughout the train or one or two power cars or locomotives, operational requirements, maintenance capabilities and so on. Don't forget that Eurostar, DB ICE and SNCF TGV are all similar to the HST in that they have a power car at each end with passenger stock in between and they are all a tad quicker than a Voyager or Meridian. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply |
