Is our SimSIg website getting hacked? 18/04/2013 at 10:05 #43643

Over the past couple of weeks I've received e-mails from the SimSIg forum of all sorts of spurious topic none of which are related to SimSIg or railway operations which led me to suspect we are being hacked on a regular basis. Again this morning 3 more odd topics appeared, albeit they have now been removed. I wonder whether we are being targeted by one individual or a group & the usernames used are somewhat odd as well. How difficult is it for SimSig to filter this out or are we expected now to just put up with this sort of action?

Do you mean new topics being started by spammers? Happens on occasion to many online forums. Not getting hacked but rather just being targeted by spammers or their bots. Report them if you see one. Probably best not to reply in their threads. Though I have done that elsewhere once or twice for fun.

OK spammers it is. However it does seem to be happening more regularly. I've never really noticed it before if it ever did happen, but just recently it's been on the increase. Just as well the moderators are able to delete the 'spam topics' rather quickly.

With spammers its fairly difficult, becuase how do you define a test to differentiate them? for instance we have forum members named y10g9 and Aurora, neither of which have any railway bearing and are seemingly random usernames. you can't tell how genuine they are until they make a post on here. so the mods cant "filter" new members as such.

Could we not introduce the random image thingy where you have to type the letters in the warped image to submit a post? I've seen other forums use it to good effect and, whilst marginally increasing the length of time it takes to reply to a post, massively decreases the amount of SPAM :D

Edit: Would obviously only work for spam bots, but would still help to reduce spam

Or for new members before there post goes onto the forum a moderate could check it then as soon as that person has done 5-10 posts he/she gets to post straight away?

It is just spam, and it is on the rise. New users do have to do the Captcha test but even that is not very effective these days. To implement it on every post would just be a pain for everyone and is likely to reduce the number of genuine posts made.

When users sign up they expose their IP address and an email address. Both are automatically checked against online registers of known spammers and the registration is rejected if they are on those lists. There were 7 such attempts on the 16th, all rejected.

Last night's spam was from a username of "jenny2013" and name of "jennjenn". Not your typical spammer's name so although I saw the email indicating they'd registered, it wasn't until they posted that it was obvious they were a spammer and were summarily dismissed.

Except a number of bots can perfectly happily handle captchas, and those that can't sometimes flag up the captcha for a human to handle and then post happily.

To be honest, I'm not too sure where these spammers are hiding - I don't recall having ever seen one in "Recent Topics".

I recall I looked into that before and from memory it was an everyone or no-one option. But we can look again- or maybe there's a module to install.

For example there were 3 new topics raised between 09:41 and 09:42 BST today by ampfc574 which were clearly spam. They were reported to the mods by 09:45 and removed by 10:08 with the user name locked out. Because of the swift action, most people will not have seen any trace of these posts but they were there for a while.

The spam posts usually get deleted quite quickly, what with me 8 hours behind the UK, Matt C doing work shifts around the clock, and Peter/Andy also moderating.

I just looked into that and there was a feature introduced in Kunena 2.0 for that very purpose (this site started with 1.5 IIRC so it wouldn't previously have been seen). I've set it to 3 for the moment; we'll see how that goes.

I think Pascal has signed up for email notification of new posts.

Please if you insist on using this remember those with none too good eyesight. Sorry to say this but I regularly have difficulty with these.

Geoff,

alot of the random image generators also use a sound alternative to allow users who are visually impaired or have decresing eye sight to listen to the random code rather than read it. this option would only be a problem for persons who have sight and hearing difficulties.

Don't worry, I struggle with them too. Here's an example of why Captchas are only partially effective anyway, albeit a marketing spiel for an alternative.

Indeed Geoff you are correct. I suspect to save alot of aggro to other 'proper' users I'll just delete them accordingly as I have done in the past & let the moderators delete them off the forum. To ve fair the moderators are pretty quick on the uptake. On the downside it seem to be happening more & more often. Guess thats the way it is online in 2013.
I see the 'Jenny2013' is listed as the lastest memeber, as those prebious spammers were also.

But they should be disabled from posting - I generally exterminate the ones I find but others just inhibit - same effect really. I vaguely recall inhibiting was the preferred option.

Very quickly indeed - well done!

Mainly so they don't sign up again with exactly the same username and email address - leaving them inhibited means they have to pick another username and email address.

Have you ever tried the audio captcha tests? They're impossible. http://www.google.com/recaptcha/learnmore has examples if you click the speaker icon in the captcha at the top of the page.

Holy christ!! :O!!

Just tried about 3 of the tests with the sounds, did not pass any of them!

This made me crack up though, my favorite video:

Best line 'are you human? I don't know anymore 'cos I can't pass the human test!'

LOL
