Quick mini competition for somebody to design the favicons for this site. Currently there is a 16x16 and a 32x32 icon within the same file: your submission should also include both. Something keeping in with the theme of the logo or SimSig graphics would be best; even just a touch-up of the current would be great (eg make the white transparent). No fame, no glory, just a thank-you and a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

Reminds me of my previous post... http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=topic&catid=14&id=34125&Itemid=0#36446

I intended it would be used in Windows binaries, but it is always possible as a favicon.

Quote:
As this is derived from the original SimSig icon, SimSig developers and the original designer always have the full right to make use of it, modify it or deny it.
For the 32x32 icon, the only thing that I had changed is the color of the signal stem - I made it white. Any other sizes are just a derived work if it.

I simply believe if the icon needs to match the SimSig style, there is no way to have a transparent or white background... except it really seems a bit too dark as a favicon...

If I may criticize a bit, the stem seems too long on most of these (though not 16x16). The green head needs to be further to the left (compare the stem proportions on 256x256 and 32x32). The stem also needs to be thinner on at least 64x64 and 48x48. But thanks for having a go.

As I said, a derived work from the original SimSig program icon. It's exactly like that and the only thing I've changed is the color of the signal stem. The smallest and largest icons are separately drawn because the area is either too small or too large.

Actually, it may be a good idea to redesign the icon to either make it more modern (like Windows 7 style) or more "modern"[1] (like Windows 8 style).

Note: 1. "Modern" here is also known as "Metro".

Thanks. Could you attach a version of that favicon with just 32x32, 24x24, and 16x16 please? I don't think any browsers use the larger icons, though I've only tried a few (in fact I think I could only find Chrome that used a bigger icon).

I'm not sure whether you mean it's impossible to have a transparent background in general, or whether it would just look odd with s transparent (or white) background. But transparency is an option with favicons; I just haven't worked out how to do it on Win7/Paint yet (I really ought to get a decent picture editor).

No problem :)

The program that I use is IcoFX (which can be found as a portable application at http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/icofx_portable). It is actually quite nice (as long as I can't find an opensource alternative ).

When making the icon, I actually edited it pixel by pixel, since no vector graphics is needed. All it needs is to display nicely on a monitor. (Didn't even have any anti-alias except for 16x16.)

I mean the style. If SimSig is aimed at simulating the IECC (hope I get it right) environment, then the icon probably need a dark background to reflect this nature, IMHO.

If you're looking for a decent image editor, like @Rickurd said you should try Paint .NET (http://www.getpaint.net/) and also get some nice plug-ins. :)

My advice is to not use mspaint.exe, even though it has improved in Windows 7 (it's still a lot weaker than Paint .NET.)
