Here is a senario which I had: I receive 6 from SBb, as the 8 coach 1SXX, Edinburgh/Man Vic had derailled the engine and 2 coaches on the UL, between his Outer and inner home-signal. Job stopped. I had 20 bosses in my SB, all-in-all. On the UF I received the breakdown-crane and the tool-van as seperate class 1 trains. These both got shunted onto the DL. Then, the Chief signalling Insp turned round to me and said: we can only send 1 train wrong-line to assist and we have 2. What happenned next? Take a possession and treat them as engineering trains entering possession. (I guess it would've been the same TIII I was familiar with when you were in the box?) That's what they did after the Wembley collision of 1984. Also after the Sandy derailment of 1969 (I wasn't on the railway then but I did have the GN main line just north of Biggleswade station as a next door neighbour). It was also suggested at signalling school that this was the most likely course of action once a significant derailment had been confirmed (especially as Pway repairs would be necessary as well).

Get someone to take the Chief Signalling Inspector out of the way. Send the two trains in, with strict instructions to be careful. Clear all the lines. Get rid of the trains. Agree with everyone else to say nothing. Job done!  Log in to reply |

You could argue that its against the rules for a train to derail, and this claim it to be extenuating circumstances?

Get rid of the trains. Agree with everyone else to say nothing. That happened alot during the 1980s on BR. I specifically rememer 2 occasions we had derailments at Whitemoor marshalling yard. On one occasion a 4PS Cargo-Waggon' twin became derailed on the double slip crossovers between the departure roads & the sorting sdgs. The Cambridge tool vans had been sent for, however in the meantime the yard supervisor examined the wagon & got it re-railed using the hydraulic jib on a JCB to rerail the wagon. A Cl.31/1 arrived with the Cambridge tool vans about 2 hours later only to be told it had been sorted so they run round & went back to Cambridge. The second incident in 1988 was a little more serious when 47033 derailed going onto March TMD. As a result no locos could get on or off the TMD. The Cambridge tool vans also attened this incident, folllowed by a short time later the Toton TMD breakdown crane hauled by a pair of Cl.20s. An arguement then broke out between the 2 sets of breakdown gangs which ended in the locos on the Toton breakdown crane running round in Whitemoor Yard & returning back to Toton TMD. All the locos coming in off speedlink services had to be stanled in the yard as none of the locos could get onto or off the TMD for fuel, servicing etc etc, so those lcoos requiring fuel & water were sent to Peterborough as that was the nearest, or they just stabled in the yard. One incident I was involved in was the smash at Great Heck on the ECML as I had been working nights & I had to call out the Toton breakdown crane for that. I allocated a Cl.60 to take the train to the site of the smash, although the crane was held at Doncaster until needed. That wasn't a good end to that night shift by any means as alot of you will have seen pictures or read about that smash. Last edited: 25/04/2013 at 19:03 by 58050 Log in to reply |

The answer is: We coupled them up.
