On Sunday 28 April 2013, Network Rail reach the half way point of the project when the concourse and existing entrances you use today will close and three new entrances will open into the first half of your new station. You will need to allow a little extra time to get to the station and familiarise yourself with the new entrances.

I have many happy memories of 1960's New Street. It wasn't the same after they took away the main departure board.

RIP

Well, it had a glass roof before, not the concrete roof over the platforms as it is now; dismal platforms with no 'natural' light. That's going to change, I hope.

Yes, I'm just about old enough to remember the "old" New St station which had Queens Drive running down the length of it as originally it was 2 stations in effect (one LNWR, one Midland which had the more curved platforms) and in spite of years of neglect, a century of Birmingham's grimy atmosphere and the best efforts of the Luftwaffe, it was still a lighter and more inviting place than the current station. I have always regarded the 1960s rebuild of New St station as "The Black Hole of Birmingham!"

I remember there was uproar shortly after the 1960s rebuild opened because after a good hard hoar frost or half an inch of snow, New St was unusable as all the station throat points had frozen up, meanwhile there was doomed Snow Hill station working perfectly as all the station throat pointwork was under cover - unlike New St!

That was 1960s "progress" for you! Still the one good thing the rebuild did was to remove the stinky old fish dock!

This will be the second rebuild following the one in the 90s. I worked the platforms then and it caused rather a lot of confusion as every few weeks a different platform face would be closed while it was upgraded. Will be interesting to see if they make a better job this time. The 90s rehash was really just a cosmetic tinkering at what was already there. Purely my personal opinion of course.
