The hour is late, it's been a long day, and the way to relax is to reopen your favourite sim and continue where you left off...

Only one thing's missing - the aural ambience of a railway environment. Of course, in the real world of isolated control rooms I would imagine this element to be missing, but in the imagination trains are passing all around us. Maybe one day SimSig will fill in the silence with background chat between drivers, shunters and signalmen, but in the meantime we can compensate for this with authentic train sounds.

Brad McBride, the man behind VirtualDreamer.com, has uploaded to YouTube a variety of videos containing background sounds to help us relax and sleep. My favourites include these two:

YouTube lists similar videos down the RH side of each page. I downloaded them using Firefox's Video DownloadHelper plugin, and have them playing on VLC media player in the background at low volume while SimSig is the window on top, as the video is of no interest. They don't interfere with sounds such as TRTS which I have also loaded. I have set the player to recycle the file. I suppose I could also extract the audio from each file and play that on an audio player, but so far I haven't bothered.

There are other long-playing files available on YouTube, such as from this author

If anyone else knows where to find similar long video/audio files that can be downloaded free of charge, please post.

(Added) The driver's POV files that someone has posted in this forum would make another good selection.

Maybe I should have explained that I play them in the background when SimSig is running, at low volume (50% or less) so that they are just audible.
