Just heard that Terry Pratchett will be releasing his 40th Discworld novel before Christmas - and the theme is rail! It's going to be called Raising Steam.

It's not often I endorse/promote/mention other products but I do love his Discworld books, The Truth and Going Postal being some of my favourites. Anybody else?

I read that earlier actually. Ever so pleased as he really struggles with his Alzheimer's now.

There is an Ankh Morpork model railway, on the exhibition circuit. Apparently, the builder had some discussion, with Mr Pratchett, during the building of it.

Having read all of the Discworld series, I thought it was ripe for a "railway mania" book. (Mania being to important word, given who/where!)

I've read every one of the Discworld series. Absolutely love 'em. The writing is literally laugh out loud funny. The stories with Granny Weatherwax and the witches are almost always funny. Also love the stories about the Watch as well, with Captain Carrot, the 6ft Dwarf (you may notice the irony!!). Am actually currently half way through reading "The fifth Elephant" again.

For anyone not familiar with Terry Pratchatt's Discworld, it's a set (a large set in fact) of fantasy novels based on a world that's a disc. There is magic, dragons, witches wizards dwarves, and trolls amongst others and there even a character called Death, WHO ALWAYS TALKS LIKE THIS (No I am not shouting...Deaths speech is always in capitals. You'll have to read the books to find out why!).

Incidentally, my good lady wife who reads a lot wondered what the fuss was about as I used to talk about the books. She didn't want to read them as it wasn't really her "thing". Then last year, she was laid up with a bad back so I gave her Colour of Magic to read. She's now a convert as well and can't put them down!!!

I'm pleased to hear there's a new one in the works.

In some respects, it was inevitable, considering the railway's importance in modern life; and the primary city of Ankh-Morpork is acknowledged a parody/pastiche/homage of London - which is famous for, amongst other things, a certain railway network.

With hindsight, there may have been veiled references in earlier works; specifically "The Undertaking" (a large-scale engineering/redevelopment program, possibly involving dwarfs and tunnels under the city...).

We've already seen a Discworld loving treatment of a postal service / telegraphy, banking, motion pictures, modern policing, newspapers, rock music, and football; with books focussed around each concept. I recall there's also been Discworld-flavoured implementations of PDAs, cameras, buses, and insurance (followed swiftly by insurance fraud). I eagerly anticipate railways (with all their foibles, quirks, and oddities) getting the Pratchett treatment.

I wonder if Patrician Vetinari will instruct Commander Vimes to establish the AMTP?

Reason: forgot about newspapers and music with rocks in

There's also a dwarf mining rune that is a circle with a horizontal line through it...

I have to admit that I was a big Discworld reader in my teens but have gone off them in more recent years - partly because of my own tastes changing, partly because I felt that more and more of the series were just filler. Still, I might have to get a copy of this new one!
