Hi all,

currently working on a brighton timetable with Brighton - Cardiff central Loco hauled services (Cl.33).

does anyone have any info on where the ECS for these services was berthed overnight, and also the method of working in the station? ie, were the locos shunt released by the pilot or was it one on the stops, a second works it out?

equally how was the ECS worked from top yard/hove/Lovers if thats where it was stabled.

Which year is this for? Might be in the 1981 WTT for Brighton I have which there was 33's to Portsmouth but unsure if Brighton's ran. Only other WTT I might have is 1987 but I'll have a look in any types of ECS are in there

its 1984, but the WTT doesnt indicate any relevant ECS movement at all

Not sure if this will help or not. But according to my colleagues that have been at TBASC from the year dot. After the October 1984 signalbox fire at Brighton Box all the loco hauled trains to and from the west country started and terminated at Hove.

I'll have a ask in Eastbourne train crew depot tomorrow, theres a few ex-brighton drivers there. I would of thought the stock was based at Brighton Lovers Walk overnight with the Intercity services as there was a mixed traction drivers depot at Brighton. Brighton drivers (I believe) signed the route as far at Westbury.

Ex-Brighton driver told me that it was kept overnight in Lovers Walk sidings and shunted from the sidings into the platform, normally platform 2, although he did say that the train was already in the platform for him to take out. Brighton drivers used to go as far as Salisbury, not Westbury.

I'll talk to other Brighton drivers to find out more when I can.

Hello Joe, it will very interesting to see how the pre Brighton resignalling TT works out with the post resignalling layout. Mind you it wasn't as busy passenger train wise compared with today, but on the other hand there should be more parcels/paper trains to play with :-)

Spoke to an ex-Fratton driver earlier who said he drove loco-hauled passenger from Portsmouth into Brighton, is there anything thing in the timetable that came from Pompey that was loco-hauled?

Just to put a bit humour into this. When I was based at Brighton as a passed cleaner, I heard a story that back in the early seventies a Class 50 was on a Cardiff-Brighton cross country and it stayed at the end of platform 2 for a week. Do not know if anybody in the Brains (Control) got a kick in the pants for allowing such a movement.

Going a little off-topic, something of the kind used to happen at Ripple Lane soon after the class 56s were introduced. There was one particular train that kept on arriving with a 56 - absolutely brand, spanking new and still smelling like a new car. Trouble was, the crew were booked to leave it and travel home pass, the loco being picked up by another crew for the back working that evening. Ripple Lane men didn't sign 56s so, wherever the blessed thing was left, it was usually in the way (even if the inward crew had bothered to find out where the Train Crew Supervisor wanted it). Many were the requests to the foreign depot to send some other traction. Always ignored; they knew RL men didn't sign 56s and they didn't want their engine being nicked for some other job.

Until...

One day a loco arrived as a failure at Stratford. There was nothing spare to hand, so Control rang Ripple Lane (more in hope than expectation). The TCS saw his chance and innocently enquired whether the steedless crew signed 56s...

When the crew arrived for the back working they were told their engine was waiting for them at Stratford... a run-down beat-up 47 just about got going again after it had failed earlier in the day!

It was a long time before Ripple Lane ever saw another 56
